What Should A Competitor Weigh?

It has been brought to the attention of Powerlifting Watch that some powerlifting federation or federations have been giving a certain amount of variance to competitors when they officially weigh in. While the matter is currently under investigation, we would like to get your input.

What does the readership think? It is my understanding that most (if not all) federation's rule books have specifically defined ranges for a particular weight class. If a person is .1 kilos over, then they are over.

In addition, how much responsibility falls on US- the competitors? Could you, as a competitor compete in a weight class if the official weighing you in "gives you" some variance?

Finally, if this can be proven-what are we to do about the lifts that are done in those federations? Are they null and void?

“Right now I have a couple months off, so I’ve actually been toying with the idea of maybe going down a weight class. Since I don’t have a fight for a couple months, I’ve just been watching what I eat and see how my body without trying to put size on; what my natural weight will fall now at now since I have lifted a lot lately to add size. I’m kind of curios where I think I would fall at. Because some of the guys I train with that are light heavyweight, bone structures are the same.

“Sometimes I stand next to Forrest and I think I’m in the wrong weight class.”

UFC middleweight fighter Chael Sonnen will meet champ Anderson Silva at UFC 117 in August.

“I would love to go 205. 185 pounds is the toughest division in the business. So if you’re going to go after the belt, go after the tough one. But I’d love to get a night off and beat up some of those… for god sake, 205 had a karate guy that was their champion. I mean that weight class is a joke.”

Here is video of Tony Succarotte (220) competing on Saturday at the NAPF Quest American Invitational at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Succarotte placed fourth at 220 with a 1,763 pound total.

However, his day could have ended much differently. He opened with 402 pounds on the bench press before jumping to what would have been a new IPF World Record of 643 pounds for his second and then 650 pounds for his third. Had he made either, Succarotte would have run away with the weight class.

Jon Jones (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and Brandon Vera (11-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) could be headed up a division around the same time.

The light heavyweight headliners of UFC on Versus 1 spoke Tuesday to
media about their March 21 fight, and both said a trip to the
heavyweight division is not out of the question in two years, give or
take.

It would be Vera's second run in the weight class since June 2008, when
the UFC urged him to drop to 205 pounds after losses to Tim Sylvia and
Fabricio Werdrum. Jones has served his young career at light
heavyweight but said his still-growing frame may support a move up.
