Mixed martial artists have been looking to boxing guru Freddie Roach for some time now when they need some polish on their striking game, and you can add current UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre to that group. GSP recently trained with roach, who had nothing but good things to say about “Rush.”

UFC champ St-Pierre would consider retirement after Silva win, top-fighter ranking

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is ready to retire when he's considered the sport's pound-for-pound best.

Don't worry, though. On a special "Primetime" edition of MMAjunkie Radio this past Friday, St-Pierre said he's not quite there yet.

Still, if St-Pierre takes "a couple" of welterweight fights in the next year or two, and if UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva is still the pound-for-pound king at that point, the French-Canadian then would consider moving up to fight him. And if he defeats Silva, that's a win worthy of retirement, he said.

With UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen up next on the schedule, it’s interesting to get a point of view from UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre on how UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva performed in his last fight against Demian Maia. Pierre, as is usual for him, chooses not to talk to negatively about Silva, as he answered the questions for Tapology:

You know, it’s a question of style, you know what I mean? I think it was up to the other guy to put on more pressure than Anderson Silva. For sure Silva was tired—he did a lot of fakes and stuff like that—but I don’t know what happened. For the first two rounds I think it was a great display of Muay Thai and Capoeira, but I heard he said some bad things in the fourth round and that was not nice. I don’t know what happened between these two guys before, but for me it’s not my style to talk like this.

GSP will be out of the Octagon until the end of the upcoming season of TUF, and then he will face opposing coach and number one contender Josh Koscheck. UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen will take place August 7 and most MMA fans are hopeful for a good showing from The Spider.

Jon Fitch Vs. Thiago Alves Set for UFC 117.

Jon Fitch

Thiago Alves will get his chance at redemption when he once again takes on Jon Fitch as part of UFC 117 from Oakland, California on August 7. Alves was supposed to rematch Fitch at UFC 111 but a brain “irregularity” kept him out of the bout, but the bout has had several reincarnations, or at least attempts at reincarnation. The two were scheduled to meet as part of UFC 107, UFC 111, UFC 115 and now UFC 117 so fans have been patiently waiting for the two to lock up once again.

Alves was replaced at UFC 107 due to a knee injury, and again at UFC 111 when he failed his pre fight standard ct scan. The last time the two fought was at UFC Fight Night 5 where Fitch won with a round two TKO. Both fighters, at one time in their careers, have been number one contenders and both fighters have rattled off impressive streaks, Fitch having 8 consecutive while Alves once had 7 in a row.

Fitch will come into the fight riding a 4 fight win streak and also a 7 fight streak where he’s gone to decision, with his only loss coming at the hands of UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. Alves is certainly known for pushing the tempo so this could be the first time in a long time for Fitch to not go the distance in a bout. UFC 117 will feature Middleweight champion Anderson Silva taking on Chael Sonnen and will also have a bout between heavyweight fighters Junior dos Santos and Roy Nelson.

UFC welterweight Dan Hardy is looking to make his next fight in the Octagon in front of hometown fans at the O2 Arena in London England where he is tentatively scheduled to face Carlos Condit as part of UFC 120 in October, this according to MMAWeekly.

This will be the first match back for Hardy since he badly lost a unanimous decision to Georges “Rush” St. Pierre, the current UFC welterweight champion. That loss was the only blemish on Hardy’s record since arriving in the UFC, as he was riding a four fight win streak prior to that match.

Carlos Condit is coming off a very hard fought decision win over up and coming fighter Rory Macdonald and the two garnered “Fight of the Night” honors at UFC 115: Liddell vs. Franklin. Condit is 1-1 since his debut having lost to Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 18.

Expect this fight to be very exciting, but keep in mind it’s not announced officially yet. We’ll update this story as the word comes out.
