As it turns out, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will rematch first-time contender Josh Koscheck in his backyard.
The marquee match-up will not take place in Las Vegas, as early reports suggested.
Instead, the promotion will return to Montreal's Bell Centre for the event, presumably titled UFC 124, on Dec. 11. It's the UFC's fourth trip to the Canadian city.
If it didn’t come from UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre’s own mouth, most MMA fans wouldn’t believe that the takedown king doesn’t do any strength and conditioning but its true. Fighters Only recently talked to the champ:
I don’t do strength and conditioning. The reason I lift weights is to make me more marketable, to make my shape more symmetric. I don’t life weights to have an effect on my performance, I don’t believe in it.
I believe sometimes you can do some exercises that help the nervous system. Like Olympic lifting, it makes you more explosive. Olympic lifters are the most explosive athletes in the world. Also gymnastics, I like gymnastics, I think it makes me more athletic.
GSP is certainly going against the mold with his training, but you can’t deny the results as his 21-2 record clearly shows. St. Pierre is currently riding a seven fight win streak which he’ll look to improve on when he rematches Josh Koscheck at the end of the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.
UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre has been a dominant force in the division and hasn’t looked close to losing his title. The last round he lost was to Koscheck, but St. Pierre isn’t worried. He was recently in Toronto to promote Gatorade, and he expressed that he is the best fighter for the rematch.
UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre is done justice with this long(nearly 29 minute) high light reel showcasing his abilities and a distinct similiarity to John Claude Van Damne’s style of fighting in Bloodsport. Check it out for sure.

High level welterweight fighter(consensus number 2 welterweight in the world) Jon Fitch has defeated Thiago Alves once before but he expects a “brand new” version of the Brazillian to appear at UFC 117. Fitch has defeated all fighters in the UFC he’s faced, with the notable exception of UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre but his style of fighting has left him few fans, and it seems that even UFC brass don’t want Fitch having another chance at the title. A win over Alves will certainly move him up the ladder, and make Fitch’s future title aspirations much more solid.
UFC has gained a high level welterweight addition to the division as former Strikeforce champion Jake Shields has signed with the promotion and, according to GracieFighter.com, will face a top contender in his debut match:
“Jake Shields will be debuting at the 170lbs weight division in the UFC. After careful consideration and consulting with UFC representatives it was determined Jake would be finally going back to his original fighting weight. [His] opponent is one of the UFC’s top contenders and will be announced shortly.”
Shields has been on a run for some time, taking out Robbie Lawler in 2009, then Jason Miller and Dan Henderson and there had been considerable speculation concerning Shields defecting to UFC from Strikeforce. Shields has been vocal about facing current UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre as well as middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
No word on who the “top contender” is, but Shields is a welcome addition to a somewhat stiffled welterweight field. Look for Shields to hit the Octagon some time this year and try to continue his winning ways.
Update:
Sports Illustrated Josh Gross say’s Shields isn’t signed yet but they’ll get the deal done next week.
Jake Shields isn’t officially signed with the UFC. The money is agreed to, but the contract isn’t finalized. Next week most likely.
Update II: UFC president Dana White sent a message to MMAFighting.com, saying the announcement that Jake Shields had signed with the UFC was “not true” and that negotiations between the two sides, “They take time.”
Thiago “The Pitbull” Alves will be looking to avenge a prior defeat that has haunted him for more than four years as the American Top Team trained knockout artist clashes with relentless ground and pound technician Jon Fitch at UFC 117.
The pair of welterweights are set to face off in a highly anticipated rematch on August 7 from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
Retuning to the Octagon for the first time since having corrective surgery to repair an arteriovenous malformation in the brain following a title defeat suffered at the hands of Georges St Pierre at UFC 100, Alves is candid about his level of confidence heading into this extremely pivotal bout with Fitch.
“I can’t wait for it to happen, man… This fight needed to happen, but I’ll get him this time, I’ll beat this guy up, I’ll knock him out,” said Alves in a recent conversation with Tatame.com.
The 26-year-old Brazilian promises to display a brand new and improved version of himself come UFC 117.
“I believe we both improved a lot, but I’m much better than him now,” said Alves. ”When I fought him, I wasn’t on my best shape, but there’re no apologies, he won. I’m much more complete when it comes to that last fight, I can’t wait to show people who the new Pitbull is.”
And if things go his way against Fitch in California, Alves would be lying if he said he wasn’t interested in avenging that UFC 100 defeat suffered to the current UFC Welterweight Champion.
“I fixed what I had to fix,” said Alves in regards to how he has evolved since his prior meeting with GSP. ”There’re no apologies, [St Pierre] was better than me on that night, but nowadays things would be different. But, first I have to beat Jon Fitch.”
