First Female Wrestlers to Compete at Iowa State Tournament

February 15th, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

Megan Black had a dream to make history by becoming the first-ever female competitor to qualify for the Iowa High School State Wrestling Meet.

After one long day that ended with one long match, Black made her dream a reality. The Ottumwa sophomore will be one of two of the first females to qualify for the state meet on Saturday, winning the 112-pound wrestleback final 12-9 over Fort Madison sophomore Christian Dunn at Mount Pleasant High School.

“It feels great,” Black said. “This is what I’ve been working for since the day I started to wrestling. It’s great that it has finally come true.”

Black is joined by fellow 112-pound female state qualifier Cassy Herkelman. The Cedar Falls freshman qualified just 15 minutes before Black at the 3A district meet in Waverly-Shell Rock.

With both Black and Herkelman in the same weight class, the first two girls to ever wrestle at the state tournament could make more history this week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. A potential match-up between the two would be the first ever all-female match in state wrestling history.

Right now, Black is just happy to be making the trip.

“It’s always been my goal to make it to state. For it to finally come true is great,” Black said. “It feels awesome.”

“It was a pretty memorable moment,” Ottumwa head wrestling coach Kevin Cochran added. “For Megan, knowing how much she’s done and how hard she always works, I can’t think of anyone that deserves this more.”

No. 20 Marmion Academy (IL) : A Decade of Wrestling

February 15th, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

Ten years ago there wasn’t a wrestling room at Marmion Academy (No. 20 in the Nation).  There were no tournament plaques, no pictures of state champions, and no old chalkboard that lists the day’s schedule.

It was just a room.

However, Dean Branstetter changed all that. Branstetter, a former head wrestling coach for high schools in Indiana and Michigan, started the Marmion program that is currently ranked No. 3 by the Chicago Sun-Times in Class 2A.

While nine years is a relatively short time to come from nothing to a force to be reckoned with, Branstetter tells people that it wasn’t as easy as it seems.  Not too long ago, Marmion was the team that was getting blanked by opponents.

Marmion's Jered Cortez (Ray Luna ~ For Sun-Times Media)

“I knew I had to make sure our kids were successful to start.  There were only two wrestling classes then and we were in

AA. I made sure we wrestled a primarily A schedule and refused to change from that,” he said.  “We then got Nico Jimenez and Pat Greco and that changed things.  Both were successful and both won matches and that opened the door for some of the wrestlers today.

“I knew we had to be good in order for good kids to come.  But that’s difficult and a Catch-22 for a coach.  When we got those kids, things started to move forward for us.”

Ohio High School State Wrestling Tournament Predictions – Brakeman Report

February 14th, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

Written By:
Brian F. Brakeman

January 26, 2011

The production of this report from my handwritten copy is no easy job.  I forget words, use weird punctuation, and my handwriting gets worse with each successive weight class.  The typists who transform such material into what you are reading today deserve tremendous accolades.  Chief among them is my long-suffering cousin, Nancy Dimitris, and her colleague Vickie Billow.  Next time you see them thank them and re-express my gratitude for their work.

The first of these reports was written in 1972 in what was a much different world than today.  Newspaper coverage in most areas of the state was spotty and inconsistent at best, and non-existent in many places.  There was no Internet (which I believe has impacted wrestling, perhaps, more than any other sport) and teams generally wrestled within a few miles of their school.  At that time I was in a unique position – working for a large company that had many newspaper subscriptions, working near the wonderful Cleveland Public Library that had multiple data sources, and developing many statewide contacts via the television shows.  All this provided me with an information base that was difficult to duplicate, and provided resources for printing and distributing paper copies.

Today it has all changed.  Now there is a constant flow of information.  I am awash in data, as teams compete not only in statewide events, but in tournaments that bring together teams from many different areas of the country.  I am amazed at the efforts made by many to disseminate data and the high quality of analysis at some sites.

Finally, over the years I kept copies, at first on film and then later on ¾” tape, of virtually all of the telecasts in which I took part.  I have donated that entire collection to Cable Nine Television, who will serve as a non-profit repository of that material.  They are working to provide an index of what is available, and, perhaps, how best it can be obtained.  I am grateful for their help in this endeavor since much of the material is irreplaceable and my attic was a less than ideal storage place.  The initial cost of this material was certainly more than a million dollars in current dollars, and its preservation seems important to me.

INTRODUCTION:

The object of these annual reports encompasses two basic goals.  First is to acquaint everyone with the basic character of each weight class and identify the participants who are likely to play a major role in its resolution.  In addition, each individual district is examined as to whom its representatives might be.  Second is to stimulate interest in the whole State tournament process throughout Ohio.  Naturally, accuracy is also of primary concern, so care is taken to develop the most comprehensive list possible of outstanding wrestlers, though of necessity, the evaluation of their final place is, in part, subjective.  This report was written during a ten-day period ending January 23, based on the information available at that time. Because this material was written by that time (and in some cases somewhat earlier) and in the hands of the typists after that I have not included any information that may become available after that time. It’s kind of a snapshot in time, with a picture that will surely change in many ways by tournament time.  Certainly many of those listed at weight classes where they are currently ranked will move up or down for competitive reasons facilitated by the new rules which make it so much easier to do so.  In fact, some of those moves may well be precipitated by information contained within this document.

No. 14 High Point (NJ) wins 2011 NJSIAA Group 3 State Championship – Group Results

February 14th, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

Billy Hagany and Nick Francavilla (H.M. @ 125)  failed to make their preferred weight Sunday. But when their turns on the mat came around, the two wrestlers for High Point (No. 14 in the Nation) more than made up for it, closing out the Wildcats’ 30-28 victory over South Plainfield for the NJSIAA Group 3 state championship.

High Point (NJ), No. 2 in The Star-Ledger Top 20 state rankings, received back-to-back decision victories from Hagany at 125 pounds and Francavilla, a two-time state tournament champion, at 130 to erase a five-point deficit against top-ranked South Plainfield before 5,050 at Poland Spring Arena on the campus of Toms River North High.

“This is huge compared to an individual title, there is nothing like a team title.”

Nick Francavilla, High Point, 125 lbs.

Hagany weighed in 5 ounces over his usual 119 pounds and Francavilla was 8 ounces over for the 125 limit, forcing coach John Gardner to move each of them up.

The showdown between the state’s top two teams began at 135 pounds, meaning Hagany and Francavilla would close out the meet.

“That was really our secret plan all along,” said Gardner, with tongue planted firmly in cheek. “We told the kids we had to win seven bouts and we did that. And we knew we needed bonus points up top. We got that, too.”

The victory avenged last year’s final, in which South Plainfield (22-4) defeated High Point (22-2), 26-24, in the Group 3 championship match and took The Star-Ledger Top 20 Trophy with it. High Point’s only other group title came in 2008 when the Sussex County team won Group 3.

Tuff-N-Uff Returns To Las Vegas On September 24.

September 18th, 2010 | Author: TheMMANews.com
This article was originally published at TheMMANews.com. Copyright: TheMMANews.com.

Twelve weeks after two of the most talent-laden amateur tournaments in female mixed martial arts history began, 16 fighters have become four.

Tuff-N-Uff returns to the Orleans Hotel & Casino’s Mardi Gras Ballroom in Las Vegas on Friday, Sept. 24, and Las Vegas’ premier amateur fight promotion crowns its first-ever female champions in the 125- and 135-pound divisions with the conclusion of a pair of eight-woman brackets.

Women’s title fights of Stephanie Eggink vs. Jennie Yum and Tsui-Jen Cunanan vs. Ashley Weakley fill the evening’s co-feature slots, while the main event sees Tyson Chartier and Dustin Chevalier meet with Tuff-N-Uff’s vacant lightweight title (relinquished by former champion Ryan Couture, who turned pro in August) on the line.

Tickets for Tuff-N-Uff’s Sept. 24 event, which start at just $25, are available at the Orleans Hotel & Casino’s box office or online at OrleansCasino.com and TuffNUff.net. Fans from around the globe can watch the fights live at GoFightLive.com or TuffNUff.net.

Chartier (7-0), who trains out of Massachusetts’ famed Sityodtong USA academy, brings an unblemished mark to the ring. While equipped with the dangerous Muay Thai that has become the hallmark of the Sityodtong camp, Chartier has also flashed dangerous grappling skills in a handful of submission victories.

Chartier is currently eyeing the professional ranks, but he hopes to add the prestigious Tuff-N-Uff belt to his trophy case before ending his amateur career.

Meanwhile, three-time Tuff-N-Uff veteran Chevalier (3-2) looks to play the role of spoiler.

After suffering a shocking 14-second loss in his most recent outing, a welterweight contest, the gritty Chevalier now makes his debut in the lightweight division. Chevalier’s three career wins, all earned at 170 pounds, were all earned in the opening round, so expect a contest heavy in early action.

In the 125-pound tournament finals, explosive strikers Eggink (2-0) and Yum (6-0) meet in a battle of unbeatens that appears sure to thrill.Eggink, who also boasts a 12-1 record as an amateur boxer, earned her spot in the finals with a hard-fought decision win over a tough Katie Klimansky.

Prior to the semifinal win, Eggink claimed impressive victory over Jillian Lybarger. The West Coast Fight Club product threatened with a triangle choke in the opening round before finally securing the hold in the third. A spinning backfist also hit its mark before the final tap.

Meanwhile, Yum advanced to the tournament final in spectacular fashion with a 14-second spinning-back-kick knockout of Lindsay Jones. Shockingly, the win was not the fastest of Yum’s career, as she earned a nine-second victory in April 2009.

Yum entered the tournament as the early favorite, and while first-round opponent Nicole Hess pushed her to the limit, little has changed. Yum survived a scare after being caught in an armbar in the second round of her quarterfinal bout, but with six-straight wins to open her career, she remains the woman to beat.

And in the other tournament final, Cunanan (2-1) and Weakley (4-0) square off with the 135-pound belt on the line.

Cunanan returns for the final bout despite suffering a controversial split-decision loss in the bracket’s semifinal. Emily Peters-Kagan, who walked away with the hotly contested win in August, suffered a hand injury and was forced to withdraw – thus allowing Cunanan a shot at redemption.
Cunanan impressed in a July quarterfinal bout by swarming a favored Mollie Estes from the opening bell. The Phoenix Combat Academy product rocked her opponent early in the opening round before locking in a fight-ending guillotine choke.

Weakley brings an unblemished record to the finals after submitting Jillian Lybarger in just 77 seconds.

Prior to that semifinal win, Weakley earned a unanimous-decision victory against a tough Peters-Kagan in the tournament’s opening round. The undefeated Team Leo Dalla fighter, nicknamed “Baby Tyger,” showed a powerful Thai clinch as she battered her opponent with brutal knees throughout.

In other featured matchups, undefeated Xtreme Couture product Jake Swinney (3-0) faces fellow top prospect Travis Wright (5-0) from 10th Planet Riverside, and fan-favorite Keith “The Baddest Man in the Boardroom” Tubin (1-1) returns to action to face Team Wand fighter Jason Rivera (1-0).
In addition to the evening’s featured matchups, a full lineup of aspiring amateur fighters from some of the world’s top academies, including Fasi/Drysdale, Striking Unlimited and TapouT Las Vegas, will compete at Tuff-N-Uff’s Sept. 24 event.

The full fight card is available for viewing at TuffNUff.net, and the entire event will stream live on GoFightLive.tv.
