WEC 50 officially draws attendance of 1,861 for $275K live gate

This month's WEC 50 event officially drew an attendance of 1,861 and a live gate of $275,340.

Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer today emailed the official tallies to MMAjunkie.com.

WEC 50 took place Aug. 18 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, and a bantamweight title fight between champ Dominick Cruz and Joseph Benavidez headlined the Versus-televised main card.

As the Super 32 Challenge has become the premier pre-season tournament in the country, we continue to work hard to find ways to improve our event. We are excited to announce the following changes to be implemented with this year’s tournament. More details to follow this summer!

  • The opportunity for Early Registration in the High School Division will be extended to:
    • Previous Super 32 placers (any year, High School Division only)
    • State Championship Finalists from all Varsity High School Individual State Championships, 2009-10 season
    • Top 4 placers from Varsity High School Individual State Championships, 2009-10 season, in the following states: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, Indiana
  • We will be holding Qualifying Tournaments (High School Division) in several states between late August and mid September. The top 4 placers will be given the opportunity for Early Registration
  • Competition in the High School Division will be held over 2 days. Weigh-ins will still be Friday night. Competition will begin Saturday morning and run through the Round of 16. Quarterfinals will be on Sunday, and the period length on Sunday matches will be extended to 2-1.5-1.5.
  • An additional 500 entries will be allowed in the High School Division
  • Middle School competition will be held on Sunday only (weigh-ins Saturday evening)
  • Belts will be given in the Middle School Division
  • College out-of-bounds rule will be used

"Strikeforce: Houston" draws attendance of 8,635; CEO credits K.J. Noons

HOUSTON - Strikeforce's first trip to the Lone Star State resulted in an attendance of 8,635, which officials surely will consider a success.

Saturday's event, "Strikeforce: Houston," aired on Showtime with a pair of title fights and took place at the Toyota Center in Texas.

MMAjunkie.com confirmed with a Strikeforce official the attendance figure, which company CEO Scott Coker said in ni doubt was aided by former Houston resident K.J. Noons, who defeated fellow lightweight Jorge Gurgel on the night's main card.

At the recent SLP Wisconsin Outlaw State Fair BP & DL Championships. Held at the James E. Dottke High School - West Allis, Wisconsin. Submaster Andrea Thiel made her powerlifting debut with a big 275 raw bench and 415 raw deadlift at 165. Here we have a couple of photos of Andrea's lifts from the event.

Learn the basics of amateur wrestling from John Smith, head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys and one of the most decorated wrestlers in American sports history. In this instructional video, Coach Smith explains how a pin (or “fall”) is achieved, and explains the new out of bounds rule, illegal moves, injury timeouts, and the scoring system for both individual matches and dual meets.

John Smith is the all-time winningest coach at Oklahoma State University, whose wrestling program has won an NCAA-best 34 team national championships. Smith is a two-time NWCA National Coach of the Year, and has coached the Cowboys to five NCAA team national titles. Smith has also coached more than twenty NCAA individual champions, as well as nearly 100 All-Americans. In addition to wrestling for and now coaching his alma mater, Smith is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and has also coached the USA Olympic Wrestling team.
