No. 2 Blair Academy routed No. 4 St. Edward, 39-15, this weekend at the 2011 St. Edward Super Quad in Lakewood, OH.

With several hundred fans in attendance for a rare home event against top opponents, St. Edward had a chance to build early momentum against Blair Academy.  The dual started at 140 pounds, and the Eagles’ upper weights are their teams strength.  Blair freshman, 145 lb. Dylan Milonas caught St. Edward junior state qualifier Matt VanCuren in the first period and pinned him in 1:12, as Blair took a 9-0 lead.

“That was a big match that could go either way,” Blair coach Jeff Buxton said. “It was a big boost for our team. It gave us some momentum, because they knew from 103 to 135 pounds, we’ve got a heck of a lineup.”

The meet was tied, 15-15, after the heavyweight match, which paired Fargo, N.D., champs Greg Kuhar of St. Edward (junior national champ) and Brooks Black of Blair (cadet champ).  Black won, 5-0, on a takedown and three escapes, which began a string of seven straight Blair match wins to take the highly-anticipated dual meet, 39-15.

St. Edward won its first two duals handily, defeating No. 7 Wyoming Seminary (PA), 43-16, and Kiski Prep, 64-9.

We have all our starters coming back next year.  We’ll be better next year.  I think we’re going to be national champs next year.  We’re really good right now and we’re only getting better.”

Jacob Davis, St. Edward (171 lbs)

Daniel DeShazer (No. 15 @ 130) Wants Two Championships in Kansas

In recent seasons, the top spot in the Class 6A wrestling team rankings has been occupied by mostly Goddard, with Derby and Garden City occasionally making appearances at No. 1.

Since the beginning of January, though, Heights has maintained the top ranking and barring an unexpected slip, the Falcons should carry that ranking into the state tournament in three weeks.

“Rankings are what they are — a guess based on the performance of an athlete or team at that moment,” Heights coach Mike Church said. “It’s an honor to be ranked No. 1, but it would be more of an honor to finish the season No. 1.”

Heights has chosen to pace itself throughout the season, setting the stage for its first state championship in 43 years. The Falcons have won just two tournaments, but have finished second twice and also defeated Kapaun Mount Carmel — No. 3 in 5A — last week to take the lead in the City League.

“Dynamics of tournaments change depending on the teams present,” Church said. “So until the teams in the tournament are the 6A teams, we call it a good weekend, realize we are not perfect, and strive to get better.”

The Falcons have nine ranked wrestlers, including two # 1′s — (pictured above) Daniel Deshazer (130 pounds) and Matt Reed (160). The depth the Falcons have is key for the postseason because getting points in the consolation rounds is sometimes more important than champions themselves.

Chael Sonnen Let CSAC Know A Day Prior About Using An Illegal Substance.

Chael Sonnen

Thing don’t seem to be getting any better for UFC middleweight fighter Chael Sonnen who was recently busted by CSAC for taking performance enhancing drugs. Now word has come out via SI.com that Sonnen actually let California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) executive director George Dodd know of the use prior to his matchup with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Here’s the blurb:

Sonnen, 33, of West Linn, Ore., was apparently concerned enough about the possibility that he would render a positive test that he told CSAC executive director George Dodd he used an illegal performance enhancing drug leading up to the biggest fight of his life.

“He only indicated that he was taking it but he never indicated why,” Dodd said of a conversation he and Sonnen shared during drug testing conducted by the state a day prior to the fight.

Sonnen “just let me know he was taking [something] and that’s when I called over an inspector to get it documented. But when you do take it you still have to show a medical reason.”

Sonnen has been a constant mouth piece before and since his fight with Silva, but now he’s strangely silent and still hasn’t given his side of the story. Could it all be a misunderstanding or a medical use of testosterone. Sounds unlikely.
