MMA ref Josh Rosenthal had a huge number of fans questioning why he didn’t stop the fight between Shane Carwin and Brock Lesnar. He explains himself fairly well, but Carwin fans will continue to point out that had the situation been reversed that Lesnar would have got the call. Agree or disagree?
MMA Live recaps Brock Lesnar’s come-from-behind triumph over Shane Carwin at UFC 116. Lesnar’s next opponent, Cain Velasquez joins the guys from San Jose to assess his chances. Chris Leben checks in following his second win in as many weeks.
Former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson thinks that UFC champion Brock Lesnar only has a puncher’s chance of beating Cain Velasquez, who is a teammate of his at AKA in San Jose. Thomson, who’s coming off a submission victory over Pat Healy despite breaking two ribs early in the bout, recently used Facebook to express his thoughts on the upcoming(though there’s no date decided) heavyweight bout:
“Cain is wrestling every day with this years NCAA Div 1 national champ from MO. who is about 280lbs and let me tell you that Cain coming off a knee surgery 4wks ago is getting takedowns just fine as well as not losing any. Cain is a better wrestler/striker/MMA fighter than Brock but like you said, Brock is bigger with a huge punch. That is the only chance I give Brock though is a punchers chance cuz I don’t see him holding Cain down “IF” he can get the takedown.”
Lesnar vs. Velasquez should be an interesting fight, with MMA fans lining up to tout the virtues of both fighters. No official word on when it will take place, with UFC hoping for September but Lesnar seeming to want to take some time to be with family, and for farming. We’ll keep you up to date.

Having not suffered a legitimate defeat in more than ten years competing at the highest level of mixed martial arts led many to believe that Fedor Emelianenko was as close to unbeatable as anyone in the sport.
Unfortunately for Fedor and his legions of fans throughout the globe, every man can be beaten.
Such was the case this past weekend as decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Fabricio Werdum handed the long dominant Russian Sambo expert the first true loss of his career in the form of an air-tight armbar/triangle conversion during the main event of “Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum“.
While many sceptics would love to point at the defeat as a sign that Fedor has somehow lost his lethal touch in the heavyweight division, the more likely scenario is that Emelianenko finally made a crucial mistake that ended up costing him following more than thirty tests as a professional.
“I was quick to attack Werdum on the ground and committed a fatal error against a prominent opponent,” admitted Fedor in a recent release at M-1Global.com. “I believe in my abilities as a fighter and will return to my training with a newfound outlook. I will use this moment to reflect and return stronger to fight in America.
“It happens so that I was made an idol. Everybody loses. That happens. I’m an ordinary human being as all of us are.”
So where does the greatest heavyweight fighter of our time go from here?
Werdum made it a point to confess his desire to face off with Emelianenko one more time immediately following the pair’s clash in San Jose, and it now looks as if Fedor’s camp wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I think a rematch with Werdum will bring a different outcome than what we witnessed this evening and would be in the best interests of the promotions and for the sport,” said Fedor representative and M-1 Global co-founder, Vadim Finkelchtein. ”This is an opportunity for us to learn and evolve.”
M-1 Global has further stated that Emelianenko would prefer a return to action in early Fall. September and October have specifically been referenced as possible ideal return dates for Fedor.
Stay tuned to FiveOuncesofPain.com as we keep you up to date on any developments regarding Fedor’s return date and opponent.
During the Saturday night’s post fight press conference for “Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum”, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker announced the gate totals for the event.
A total of 12,698 fans witnessed history as Fabricio Werdum handed Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko his first loss in ten years. Those fans brought in a total of $1,066,739 at the gate which will be confirmed in the coming days by the California State Athletic Commission.
The attendance record ranks number six among Strikeforce events held at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. Number one is held by “Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Gracie” which happened in March 2006 brought in 18,265 fans.
Fabricio Werdum talks about his fight with Fedor Emelianenko in last nights main event bout at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. He offers his thanks to his team and coaches in preparing him for this fight and couldn’t be happier with his victory over “The Last Emporer.”
“I trained on the ground,” Werdum said. “I trained standup. I trained wrestling. [Muhammad 'King Mo' Lawal], the champion, helped me. I trained everything, but the plan was on the ground because I started in jiu-jitsu. I’m training all the time in jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, wrestling, boxing.
“It’s very important to be surrounded by a good vibe and people that believe in you. You have a team behind you, and they believe in you, and that helps you step-up your game.”
At one point of the post-fight press conference, Werdum jokes that he doesn’t remember being hit by Fedor and that maybe his brain got scrambled by the punch.
“I don’t remember the fight right now,” Werdum admitted. “I don’t have a memory of it right now. Fedor punched me?”
After the room erupted at what most thought was a joke, the Brazilian clarified his honesty.
“I’m not joking,” Werdum said. “I’m serious. Maybe those punches affected my mind. He’s a strong guy.”
Mixed Martial Arts history was made last evening in California as decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Fabricio Werdum became the first man to hand the greatest fighter of our time Fedor Emelianenko the first true defeat of his professional fighting career.
Also in action from San Jose during “Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum” was Strikeforce 145 lb. Female Champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, who dished out a beating to Jan “Cuddles” Finney that she will not soon forget, along with former middleweight champ Cung Le who evened the score with Scott Smith in the highly anticipated rematch between the two with a vicious second round TKO.
