Seven Cowboy Wrestlers Win Weight Class Titles At Central Missouri Open

Warrensburg, Mo. - Oklahoma State opened its 2007-08 wrestling season with a solid showing at the Central Missouri Open Sunday, as seven different Cowboys won their respective weight classes and an additional five OSU wrestlers were finalists in their respective weight classes.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came when OSU's Tyler Shinn knocked off teammate and top-ranked Coleman Scott with a 3-1 sudden victory in the championship bout at 133 pounds. Shinn and Scott have faced off three times since last Wednesday, with the two going to the wire in each of the three matches. A three-time All-American, Scott handed Shinn a 5-4 setback in ranking matches last Wednesday, then claimed a 4-3 victory over Shinn at the Orange and Black Dual the next night.
In other action at 133, freshman Jamal Parks was impressive, taking third place with his only loss coming at the hands of eventual champion Shinn in the semifinal bout.
OSU was well-represented at 125 pounds, where redshirt freshman Ben Ashmore took second place after suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Stanford captain and two-time All-American Tanner Gardner.
"I thought as a team we had some good, we had some not-so-good, and we definitely had some ugly," Head coach John Smith said. "I'd still give the team a passing grade though for now. We still have a lot of things to work on and we will continue to get better."
Cowboy senior and two-time All-American Nathan Morgan stormed through the 141 pound weight class by claiming two technical fall victories and a trio of major decision wins before handing Central Oklahoma's Kyle Evans a 6-1 defeat in the title bout. Freshman Luke Ashmore took fifth place at 141 pounds by beating Missouri's Vince Hannon by a 5-3 margin in the fifth place match.
Redshirt freshman Quinten Fuentes further strengthened his grip on a potential starting spot at 149 pounds by winning the weight class at Central Missouri. Fuentes routed Central Oklahoma's Colby Robinson, 10-2 in the championship bout after picking up a pin and a tech fall on his way through the bracket. The starting spot at the 149 pound weight class is wide open at Oklahoma State, but Fuentes is making a strong case after winning his match at the Orange and Black Dual, then rolling to the title Sunday.
"Quinten wrestled well and took advantage of some upper body attacks," Smith said. "He has had a much better start this year than last year. The starting spot at 149 will still be evaluated at over the next couple weeks and no decision has been made yet, but Quinten is doing well."
Newly McSpadden, the Cowboys' returning starter at 157 pounds, was strong Sunday, finishing as the runner-up behind Stanford All-American Josh Zupancic. 157 is another weight class that is open for competition at OSU, and with a win at the Orange and Black Dual plus a solid showing at Central Missouri, McSpadden has stated his case. Teammates Neil Erisman and Ryan Freeman took fourth place and fifth place, respectively Sunday.
Looking to replace two-time NCAA individual champion Johny Hendricks at 165 pounds in the Oklahoma State lineup, sophomore Kyle Griffin took second place at Central Missouri, falling to Missouri Valley's Chris Jones in the final, 7-4. Teammate Kevin Wainscott finished fifth.
Oklahoma State rolled in the upper weights, with All-American Brandon Mason steamrolling through at 174 pounds with a pair of tech fall wins to go with two major decisions. At 184 pounds, Cody Hill also claimed a pair of tech fall wins and a pair of major decisions before beating Central Missouri's Jeremy Hudson in the championship bout, 7-1. Freshman Adam Rosholt took sixth at 184 pounds.
One of the more interesting results of the day came in the championship match at 197 pounds, where OSU freshman Clayton Foster knocked off teammate and returning starter Jared Shelton, 6-3. The two met last Thursday at the Orange and Black Dual, with Shelton claiming a 10-3 win. This remains a weight class to watch for the Cowboys.
Cowboy sophomore Jared Rosholt won the heavyweight bracket with a 1-0 victory over Lindenwood's Lance Shunia in the championship match.
The Cowboys return to action next Saturday when selected OSU wrestlers compete at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb.

Gopher Wrestling Team Tops No. 1 Oklahoma State, 21-15 By Flowrestling [Article]

December 7th, 2006 | Author: Flowrestling

The No. 3 University of Minnesota wrestling team sent an early season statement Wednesday night with a 21-15 victory over top-ranked Oklahoma State. The Golden Gophers won three of the final four matches of the night to put the Cowboys away.
Minnesota has now won eight of the last 11 meetings between the two storied programs. The Gophers snapped a streak of eight consecutive duals between the two teams in which the home team was on the losing end. The Maroon and Gold earned its first victory over the Cowboys at home since a 23-16 victory on Feb. 5, 1994.
Jayson Ness got things started for the Gophers with a 6-3 decision over OSU's Tyler Shinn. Ness fell behind midway through the first period after a Shinn takedown, but he came back to tie the match in the second. Ness scored a takedown at 0:55 of the third and earned the bonus point for time advantage to earn the victory.
The Cowboys took a 4-3 lead in the next match after Coleman Scott defeated Mike Thorn by way of major decision, but it was the only lead they would see, as the Gophers stormed back with a major decision and tech fall in the next two matches.
The marquee match-up between No. 5 Manuel Rivera and No. 3 Nathan Morgan did not occur, as Morgan did not make the trip to Minneapolis. Rivera took advantage of the lesser caliber wrestler OSU sent to the mat with a 13-3 major decision over Ethan Kyle.
Top-ranked sophomore Dustin Schlatter followed with his third consecutive shutout, a 15-0 tech fall over Ryan Freeman at 149 pounds. Schlatter scored a takedown just 17 seconds into the match and had three near falls in the first period. Much of the same followed in the second, as he scored another early takedown and earned five back points to end the match at 1:06 of the second period.
Oklahoma State staged a rally to get back into the match, with major decisions at 157 and 165, but a courageous effort by Jeremy Larson against OSU's top-ranked Johny Hendricks prevented the Cowboys from seeing the lead.
With the match tied at 12 following two OSU major decisions, junior Gabriel Dretsch turned the momentum in Minnesota's favor with an emotional victory over No. 8 Brandon Mason. Dretsch scored a takedown lat in the first period and was awarded another point in the second after Mason was warned for stalling twice. Dretsch looked to the crowd of 4,926 fans that packed into the Sports Pavilion for the extra burst of energy, and he was able to prevent Mason from scoring in the third to come away with the 3-1 decision.
Second-ranked Roger Kish gave the crowd more to cheer about with an exciting 13-7 victory over Jack Jensen in the following match. Kish scored two takedowns in each period en route to the win. The crowd was perhaps its loudest of the night following one of Kish's shots in the third in which he rode Jensen off the mat. Kish fed off the crowd, pumping both arms in the air, and he utilized that energy to finish off Jensen.
Oklahoma State cut Minnesota's lead to three after Jared Shelton earned a 9-2 decision over sophomore transfer Yura Malamura, but there was no need to panic as top-ranked heavyweight Cole Konrad stepped onto the mat to face Jared Rosholt. A first period takedown was all Konrad would need to put the Cowboys away, though Rosholt gave him a tough match.

Top-ranked Cowboys Survive Bedlam Scare, 17-15 By Flowrestling [Article]

NORMAN, Okla. -

Oklahoma State's Jared Rosholt recorded a decision over Brad Farmer in the final match of the dual to lift the top-ranked Cowboys to a 17-15 victory over Bedlam rival Oklahoma at the McCasland Fieldhouse in Norman, Okla.
OSU extended its Bedlam winning streak to 17 consecutive matches and improved to 3-0 on the season. OU dropped to 3-1 on the year.

The Cowboys and Sooners traded victories following OU's victory at 157 by Will Rowe, which gave the Sooners a 9-8 lead in the dual. Johny Hendricks gave OSU the lead back with a decision, but OU's Josh Weitzel upset Brandon Mason in sudden victory to put the Sooners in a position for their first Bedlam victory since the 1995-96 season. Hendricks victory was the 100th of his career.

The swing match came down to 184 where Jack Jensen met Josh Hinton. OU had fifth-ranked Joel Flaggert waiting at 197 where he could put the dual out of reach for the Cowboys. Jensen took control of the match with a first period takedown and a second period rideout. Jensen held on for a 5-3 decision to give the Cowboys a 14-12 lead in the dual.

"Coming in you have to perform for the team," Jensen said. "It was my job to get the win whether it is a decision or major decision or whatever. I need to win to help my team. In that situation it was pivotal."

"It was nice to see him step out there and create some action," head coach John Smith said. "He put on a tough ride and that is what it takes to win tough matches. He did a fine job of it."

Flaggert gave the Sooners the lead once again, but OSU's Shelton did his job by limiting Flaggert to just a decision. That set the stage for Rosholt who was strong from the top position and rode OU's Brad Farmer for over three minutes. Rosholt got a third period takedown to seal the dual for the Cowboys.

"It took a little of the nervousness off," heavyweight Jared Rosholt said about receiving a penalty point in the first period. "You are able to relax a little more because you are up by a point. Just be smart and wrestle well from that point on. It felt good to lock up the win."

The difference in the score was the two major decisions that the Cowboys got from Coleman Scott and Nathan Morgan as the two teams each won five matches. All five of OU's victories were by decision.

The Cowboys will return to action on Wednesday in Minneapolis as they tangle with third-ranked Minnesota at 7 p.m. The match can be heard live on 93.7 FM with Rex Holt and Roger Moore providing the commentary.
