“I Am The Ultimate Fighter,” James Toney

James ToneyJames “Lights Out” Toney (0-0) is out to prove that there is only one top combat sport and that’s boxing. In August he’ll back up his words against UFC legend Randy Couture when Toney makes his MMA debut to show the world that he is ‘the ultimate fighter.”

“I respect Randy Couture because he is a legend in his sport. The difference is I am the ultimate fighter. I’m not worried about nothing he can do; he better worry about what I can do. Everybody asking, ‘James, what you gonna do when he gets you on the ground? You better work on your ground game.’ Work on my ground game for what? I ain’t going to sleep…I respect the sport of MMA because they train hard. The training is hard as hell. Whatever I do, I’m going to get the best trainers out there. I got Juanito, Trevor, Tony, my conditioning coach, and King Mo helping me out. We coming in hard. Like I said, I didn’t want to fight no C-level fighter. You ran your mouth Dana White, now put your best man in there. I wanted Brock Lesnar, but he was sick with his stomach problems and I hope he’s better now, but hey, it’s time to put up or shut up and come August 28th, we going to war. I’m going to let everybody know that boxing still reigns supreme.”

Leonard Garcia’s Next Fight Is Going To Be Big

leonard_garcia_200Before his victory over the “Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung, WEC featherweight Leonard Garcia (14-5-1) wasn’t a name casual fans would recognize. Now after the two fighters epic WEC 48 battle on Spike TV, both fighters are household names.

Having to sit out his six-month medical suspension, Garcia has some time to prepare for his next fight and the two-time back-to-back WEC “Fight of the Night” winner say’s he’s gonna face a big name in his next fight. One that may have title implications should he win.

“It’s going to be a big fight, somebody I haven’t fought before, a really big name in the division, and it should definitely have title implications afterward. I’m trying to give you as many clues as I can without giving it away. To me it seems like a really exciting fight, because this guy’s always in really exciting fights.”

He’s got no plans on changing his style for this upcoming fight even if a title is on the line.

“I’m not going to change my style any time soon, so I guess I’ll just be in the back smiling again on the way to the hospital.”

Shu Hirata On The State Of Japanese Mixed Martial Arts

May 14th, 2010 | Author: TheMMANews.com
This article was originally published at TheMMANews.com. Copyright: TheMMANews.com.

japanese_flagJapanese manager Shu Hirata, who manages such fighters as Takeya Mizugaki and Yoshiyuki Yoshida, spoke out about the problems facing Japanese mma and the future of the sport in Japan.

MMAFighting.com interviewed Hirata, who had some interesting views of the state of mixed martial arts in Japan. No need to put our spin on it, Hirata’s comments say it all.

So what needs to change about Japanese MMA to allow more Japanese fighters to survive in the West?

The skill level of fighters, the training environment and even the respect MMA fighters get from the general public right now in North America is way ahead of Japan. I think overall effort is lacking. The promoter is not putting enough effort to promote shows. For example, there is not enough emphasis on getting sponsors and TV deals from overseas.

I think fighters and gyms are not putting in enough effort to learn new training methods. There should be more fighters going to the states for training, and more trainers should be coming to the States to see and learn what the other MMA fighters and trainers are doing. Also, Japanese fighters should also put in a little more effort to learn about training, dieting, nutrition and everything else necessary for MMA. I think fighters and gyms should be more keen on bringing in their own sponsors. All of these things would ultimately bring more business to the world of the Japanese MMA but I don’t see that happening. It has been the same for the last ten years or so.

What do you think can bring about these changes needed in Japan?

Unless going digital in 2012 makes a big difference in the Japanese TV market, Japanese MMA would never ever going to beat Zuffa because there is no such a thing as a big PPV market in Japan. People in Japan are not used to paying for television. It’s not customary. It’s not common. The only way to revive Japanese MMA, I believe, is to have a Japanese UFC or WEC champion.

Look at MLB. its very popular in Japan now because there are Japanese stars that are doing well – like Ichiro and Matsui. But in the UFC or WEC, we still haven’t seen Ichiro or Matsui yet. Think of it this way: if GSP or Anderson Silva were Japanese, then they would be all over the Japanese TV by now and even an old lady in the deep woods of Yamagata prefecture would know what the UFC is. So fighters are the ones that can really change everything. Even only one Japanese champ might be able to change everything. We need Japanese Tiger Woods in the UFC then everything would fall into the places for the entire industry.

Hirata also criticizes Shinya Aoki for his comments after the fighters loss at the “Strikeforce: Nashville” event, implying that Japanese MMA was inferior to American MMA. Read those words and more by visiting MMAFighting.com.

“WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber’ Post Event News & Notes

April 28th, 2010 | Author: TheMMANews.com
This article was originally published at TheMMANews.com. Copyright: TheMMANews.com.

Wec-48-poster_smallWednesday was a busy day as much of the post event news became available from this past weekends “WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber” event. The show took place this past Saturday night at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. with two preliminary bouts being aired on Spike TV and the showcasing of the first ever WEC pay-per-view.

The California State Athletic Commission released the notes on the attendance totals for the event. There was a total of 12,555 paid attendees to watch the featherweight title bout between still champ Jose Aldo and challenger Urijah Faber. That many fans brought in a total of $954,635 in gate revenue.

The CSAC also released the fighter salaries which totaled $336,500 for the event, setting a WEC Record. The top earner for the evening was defending featherweight champ Jose Aldo who earned $40,000 for his victory ($20,000 to show and $20,000 for the win). Read the rest of the fighter payouts after the jump.

The CSAC also suspended 11 fighters from the event. Eight fighters were handed down six month suspensions which included main event fighter Urijah Faber, who can be cleared by a physician for his left thigh and knee. Regardless of whether or not he is cleared, Faber is suspended for a minimum of 45 days for precautionary reasons. You can view the rest of the WEC 48 fighter suspensions after the jump.

Early estimates for the ppv buys has WEC 48 looking at a between 150,000-200,000 buys for the event. Something of a success considering fans had who normally watched it for free had to be convinced to pay to see this one.

Don’t expect another PPV for the next WEC event in Edmonton, UFC/WEC president Dana White told the press it will be business as usual.

“Every time we do a pay-per-view, you’ll see my monkey ass out here. But it’s business as usual when these guys are on Versus: same announcers, same everything.”

“We’ve got to take time and really look at it and hand-pick,” White said. “We’re doing so many pay-per-views, an boxing is going to do a few a year. You’ve got Vince (McMahon of the WWE) doing a bunch of pay-per-views a year. You have to pick and choose.

“We’ve got great partners with Versus and Comcast for the WEC. We know what we’re doing. We’ll do the right thing.”

Check out the full list of payouts and fighter suspensions after the jump.

Dana White Calls Strikeforce A “Bush League, C-Level Promotion”

April 19th, 2010 | Author: TheMMANews.com
This article was originally published at TheMMANews.com. Copyright: TheMMANews.com.

danawhite8xcUltimate Fighting Championship president Dana White had some harsh words for his competition after the brawl from this past Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Nashville” event.

“Shame on CBS for this. They knew they should have been with us, but they went out and let those Showtime idiots talk them into going with Elite XC.

“Now, they’re stuck with a bush league, C-level promotion that will probably be out of business next month,” he added. “And what you saw on Saturday is the kind of thing that happens when you put a product like that on national television.”

After the main event, Strikeforce middleweight champ Jake Shields was being interviewed in the cage when Jason “Mayhem” Miller, the man he defeated last November for the title, interrupted to ask for a rematch. Shields and members of Team Gracie (Gilbert Melendez, Nate and Nick Diaz) took offense and began shoving Miller who shoved back. This only ignited the incident and quickly turned into a brawl on live national television.

White commented on how amateur the event was to not control an incident like that but also noted the television commentators were “bush league.”

“When have you seen anything remotely close to that happen at a UFC event?” White said. “What kind of ridiculous commentary was that? That was an idiotic thing to say. And then he was yelling at them to stop, telling them they are on national television. That was just another example of how bush league they are.”

“You never should gamble on fights,” White said. “They bet on (Melvin) Manhoef, (that he would beat Robbie) Lawler. Lawler was very unhappy and they wanted to get rid of him, but it backfired because he knocked Manhoef out. Then they treated Shields like (expletive), let his contract expire and they put all their money on Dan Henderson. “Now, Shields destroys Henderson and look where they’re at. That’s not how you do business.”

2010 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Coverage Schedule

Alliance BJJ Sergio Moraes
Alliance’s Sergio Moraes: 2008 middleweight champion, 2009 co-champion with Marcelo Garcia. Many pick him to win his division this weekend at the 2010 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

So I arrived in Irvine a few hours ago after a caffeine-fueled but uneventful ride up from San Diego. I checked in to the lobby at the Marriott where the IBJJF set up discounted rates for those attending and immediately saw a few friends, which is always a nice way to arrive anywhere. The lobby held what I presume is an unusually high number of very athletic males between 20 and 35 wearing sweatpants and flip flops. They take turns sizing each other up when guys they don’t know are not looking, trying to ascertain the weight, affiliation, and overall toughness of those who they may face on the mats tomorrow.

For my part I headed up stairs, dropped off my stuff, tweeted, and headed right back down to the lounge for a refreshment. I caught up with Tony the Announcer, who reported that the blues and white belts who competed these past two days looked very tough. I finished my drink and now find myself here reading over some notes I have made on the competitors. In between hearing the voices of guys in nearby rooms goofing around (the Marriott front desk told me they’ve got jiu-jitsu people in more than 90 rooms), I realize it’s about time I put in writing what you can expect from us at the 2010 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship this weekend.
