HS Wrestling Super Weekend In Review

January 3rd, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net

What a weekend of wrestling! We were all over the map, ringing in the New Year in the wrestling hotbeds of Ohio and Pennsylvania at the Powerade, Medina, and Brecksville wrestling tournaments. We also cruised up to the frozen tundra to witness Apple Valley, Blair Academy, Simley, Clovis, Rapids, and Wyoming Seminary battle it out for the Cheesehead title.

The big story?  Apple Valley issued a clear warning to the rest of the nation about the depth of their squad.  The Eagles thumped Blair Academy and the rest of the field while wrestling at a level we'd call below their capabilities.  With only one champion, No. 2 recruit Destin McCauley, Apple Valley displayed their depth will be tough to beat.  Blair Academy, even with five individual champions, fell to the Eagles by 734 to 642.  Simley finished a distant 3rd scoring 559.

Alex Dieringer wrestled outstanding and appeared to be the best wrestler at Cheesehead.  Wrestling a weight class below Wisconsin recruit, Destin McCauley, Dieringer would have likely won both weight classes this past weekend.

Seventh grade phenom Mark Hall of Apple Valley proved his Christmas Tournament title was no fluke in an obscure way - he lost.  Albeit 9-7 to elite lightweight Ben Whitford of Marmion Academy.  Hall, who moved to Apple Valley this season competes at 130 pounds for the Eagles and is already one of the best in the country at the weight.

Wyoming Seminary's Dom Malone earned his way to the finals setting up a rematch of a pool play match up with Marmion Academy's George Fisher, to whom he'd lost the previous day.  Malone ended the rematch with Fisher by fall, claiming Seminary's only individual title and leading the team to a 6th place finish.

Blair Academy had a variety of impressive talent, but 103 pounder Joe McKenna and 135 pounder Austin Ormsbee stood out the most.  Ormsbee continued his strong start with a 3-0 win over Apple Valley's Matt Kelliher.  McKenna, who was seeded 3rd, dominated his way through the tournament with a 12-2 win in the semis and finishing off his finals opponent in just 1:15.
