KANSAS CITY (March 8, 2010) – Tyler Stinson, a 24-year-old native of Winfield, Kan., was the unanimous winner of an open tryout sponsored by Bellator Fighting Championships on Saturday, earning him a chance to fight in Bellator’s upcoming nationally-televised event at the Kansas City Power & Light District on April 29th.
Stinson was one of 72 fighters from as far away as New York, California, Texas and Arizona to travel to Lenexa, Kan., for the tryout, which was judged by Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney and a panel of other top Bellator talent executives. Participants included former veterans of the WEC, IFL and other top promotions.
“The talent level that we saw at this tryout was very solid,” Rebney said. “To have fighters come in on busses, trains and planes from around the country is very humbling. These guys just want a shot and I only wish that we could give that opportunity to every one of them. Our decision was a difficult one, but Tyler separated himself with great grappling and a well-rounded MMA arsenal. I’m looking forward to seeing him fight on April 29th.”
Stinson, though just 24, boasts a professional record of 16-5 in a wide variety of regional promotions across the Midwest and in Florida. Notably, he is one of only two fighters to notch a victory against 17-2 Eric Marriott, a competitor in Bellator’s upcoming eight-man featherweight tournament. Stinson will enter the April 29th Bellator event on a three-fight win-streak with all three wins coming via first round stoppages (armbar, triangle choke and TKO-punches).
“This whole experience was just awesome,” Stinson told reporters after the event. “To hear my name called at the end of the day was just unbelievable. I’m really almost speechless right now. Bellator is just such a great organization and I’m excited for the chance to fight in front of my family and friends in Kansas City.”
The second-place finisher at the event was 27-year-old Leonardo Pecanha, a native of Brazil now fighting out of Omaha, Neb. Pecanha, who boasts a pro record of 11-6, is now being considered by Bellator for an open slot at one of its May events.
The April 29th event is one of four that Bellator will be staging at the highly popular Kansas City Power & Light District. The Power & Light District encompasses multiple square blocks in the heart of Kansas City’s downtown area and features an exciting blend of restaurants, nightlife, and shopping, welcoming in excess of 6 million visitors annually.
Tickets are on sale now at Tickemaster.com, at the Midland Theater box office downtown, and in select Power & Light District venues. Check out www.powerandlightdistrict.com for more information on ticket availability.
Additional Bellator fights will be held at the Kansas City Power & Light District on:

- October 14, 2010 – Bellator XXXIV

Welcome to this weeks updates. It’s that time of year where kids are starting their migration south in weight. We try to stay on top of it and rank the kids at their current weight. So, expect some movement as the rankings get shuffled with kids dropping. If we haven’t moved a wrestler to his new weight, let us know.
We’re sure, like any rankings, there will be some derision and debate. So feel free to discuss it on our forums, or drop us an email. (We are the ‘open’ mat for a reason!)
We’ll update regularly (weekly), so check back often for updates as the season plays out.

103 Ryan Taylor is the big mover with wins over two ranked opponents. Hvolbeck, who lost twice in the last two weeks, moves down four spots. The New Oxford tournament makes the rankings a mess as Hempfield’s Austin Miller bested a weight class featuring 3 ranked wrestlers, including Conaway, who recently beat Ryan Taylor. This is a weight that’s going to depend a lot on the state tournaments.

(We are the ‘open’ mat for a reason!) Send info and resume’s to hsrankings@theopenmat.com
We’ll update regularly (weekly), so check back often for updates as the season plays out.

We offer here, the top high school wrestlers at each weight. Instead of setting an arbitrary cut-off point, we ranked kids who we feel have proven themselves to be included in the conversation and to be recognized.
We’re sure, like any rankings, there will be some derision and debate. So feel free to discuss it on our forums, or drop us an email hsrankings@theopenmat.com. (We are the ‘open’ mat for a reason!) As you can imagine trying to know everything about every kid in the country is not possible. So if you do rankings for your state, please share information with us. If you see a wrestler missing, let us know. Please be respectful and provide us with information on the wrestler so we can consider them for the next ranking. We appreciate your feedback.
We’ll try to update regularly (weekly), so check back often for updates as the season plays out. In the future, career notes will give way to season highlights and reports.

Seven Cowboy Wrestlers Win Weight Class Titles At Central Missouri Open
Warrensburg, Mo. - Oklahoma State opened its 2007-08 wrestling season with a solid showing at the Central Missouri Open Sunday, as seven different Cowboys won their respective weight classes and an additional five OSU wrestlers were finalists in their respective weight classes.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came when OSU's Tyler Shinn knocked off teammate and top-ranked Coleman Scott with a 3-1 sudden victory in the championship bout at 133 pounds. Shinn and Scott have faced off three times since last Wednesday, with the two going to the wire in each of the three matches. A three-time All-American, Scott handed Shinn a 5-4 setback in ranking matches last Wednesday, then claimed a 4-3 victory over Shinn at the Orange and Black Dual the next night.
In other action at 133, freshman Jamal Parks was impressive, taking third place with his only loss coming at the hands of eventual champion Shinn in the semifinal bout.
OSU was well-represented at 125 pounds, where redshirt freshman Ben Ashmore took second place after suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Stanford captain and two-time All-American Tanner Gardner.
"I thought as a team we had some good, we had some not-so-good, and we definitely had some ugly," Head coach John Smith said. "I'd still give the team a passing grade though for now. We still have a lot of things to work on and we will continue to get better."
Cowboy senior and two-time All-American Nathan Morgan stormed through the 141 pound weight class by claiming two technical fall victories and a trio of major decision wins before handing Central Oklahoma's Kyle Evans a 6-1 defeat in the title bout. Freshman Luke Ashmore took fifth place at 141 pounds by beating Missouri's Vince Hannon by a 5-3 margin in the fifth place match.
Redshirt freshman Quinten Fuentes further strengthened his grip on a potential starting spot at 149 pounds by winning the weight class at Central Missouri. Fuentes routed Central Oklahoma's Colby Robinson, 10-2 in the championship bout after picking up a pin and a tech fall on his way through the bracket. The starting spot at the 149 pound weight class is wide open at Oklahoma State, but Fuentes is making a strong case after winning his match at the Orange and Black Dual, then rolling to the title Sunday.
"Quinten wrestled well and took advantage of some upper body attacks," Smith said. "He has had a much better start this year than last year. The starting spot at 149 will still be evaluated at over the next couple weeks and no decision has been made yet, but Quinten is doing well."
Newly McSpadden, the Cowboys' returning starter at 157 pounds, was strong Sunday, finishing as the runner-up behind Stanford All-American Josh Zupancic. 157 is another weight class that is open for competition at OSU, and with a win at the Orange and Black Dual plus a solid showing at Central Missouri, McSpadden has stated his case. Teammates Neil Erisman and Ryan Freeman took fourth place and fifth place, respectively Sunday.
Looking to replace two-time NCAA individual champion Johny Hendricks at 165 pounds in the Oklahoma State lineup, sophomore Kyle Griffin took second place at Central Missouri, falling to Missouri Valley's Chris Jones in the final, 7-4. Teammate Kevin Wainscott finished fifth.
Oklahoma State rolled in the upper weights, with All-American Brandon Mason steamrolling through at 174 pounds with a pair of tech fall wins to go with two major decisions. At 184 pounds, Cody Hill also claimed a pair of tech fall wins and a pair of major decisions before beating Central Missouri's Jeremy Hudson in the championship bout, 7-1. Freshman Adam Rosholt took sixth at 184 pounds.
One of the more interesting results of the day came in the championship match at 197 pounds, where OSU freshman Clayton Foster knocked off teammate and returning starter Jared Shelton, 6-3. The two met last Thursday at the Orange and Black Dual, with Shelton claiming a 10-3 win. This remains a weight class to watch for the Cowboys.
Cowboy sophomore Jared Rosholt won the heavyweight bracket with a 1-0 victory over Lindenwood's Lance Shunia in the championship match.
The Cowboys return to action next Saturday when selected OSU wrestlers compete at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb.
