St. Edward, St. Paris Graham win Ohio Duals Invitational – Results

January 10th, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

St. Edward won its 12th Division I state dual meet championship Sunday, defeating Massillon Perry, 34-16, in the championship of the eight-team, three-round tournament at Wadsworth High School.  They also beat Mayfield (54-18) and Cincinnati Elder (50-10).

"This is very important because our team had a poor start this season with guys missing because of injuries and the [football] playoffs," sophomore 119-pounder Dean Heil, one of seven Eagles who were 3-0 on the day. "Perry is one of the main teams we're competing against and this shows we're the top team at the moment."

Perry was more impressive when it knocked off Wadsworth, 28-21, in an action-packed semifinal. Wadsworth was the two-time defending champion, and while that reign ended, so did its 37-dual meet winning streak, which dated back to December 2008.

Division II: Walsh Jesuit beat Crestwood, 40-32, for third place in the Division II tournament at St. Paris Graham, where the host Falcons rolled to the team title.

No. 7 seed Crestwood upset No. 2 Oak Harbor in the first round, 35-34, while No. 4 Walsh opened with a 38-30 win over Wauseon. Both local teams lost in the semifinals, Crestwood to Olentangy, 33-29, and Walsh to St. Paris Graham, 45-25.

In Division III, Chanel won the state title with a 39-27 finals triumph against West Jefferson at Metamora Evergreen High School.

Is Apple Valley Really The No. 1 Team?

January 9th, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

Last season, a well respected wrestling publication claimed there were two national championship teams - Apple Valley High School from Minnesota and St. Paris Graham High School from Ohio. Only one of these two teams went undefeated - Apple Valley. The other, St. Paris - Graham, lost to Blair Academy in an an individual tournament, later avenging the loss in a dual. HSWrestling.Net selected Apple Valley as sole champion as a result of their season's body of work which included a Cheesehead Invite, Clash Duals, and Minnesota state championship.

The mythical national championship presented each year by HSWrestling.Net takes many factors into account when selecting the champion. A combination of dual meet and individual tournament scoring potential are used when finalizing the voting process.

How will you decide between Apple Valley and St. Paris Graham this season?

While the Apple Valley wrestlers and other media outlets might be ready to hand over the 2011 National Championship to Apple Valley we have probable cause to wait until the season is over before making such a declaration.  While Apple Valley has proven themselves to be a very strong dual meet team their inability to secure championship hardware at the Cheesehead everywhere but 152 leaves their individual tournament success in question.

The Cheesehead, while an individual tournament format, is scored for team points significantly different than Ironman and Beast of the East.  You have to ask yourself, would Apple Valley win both of these tournaments this season? If you start plugging Apple Valley wrestlers into Ironman brackets you might be a bit surprised at the outcome.

What could win St. Paris Graham the National Title?

Apple Valley, the two time defending HS Wrestling National Champions, have to lose the title.  This can be done in one of two ways:

Apple Valley Loses: Either to St. Paris Graham directly or to a common opponent in a common event format (eg. Blair Academy - Dual Meet)

Apple Valley Doesn't Win Enough: State Tournament performance, especially when comparing teams that did not directly compete all year, is weighed  very heavily. We expect Apple Valley to have 8 state champions and St. Paris to have 5.  If either falls significantly short of this mark they could see their ranking drop.

Spotlighting AAMMA Promoter Parag Patel and Matchmaker Billy Donovan

November 29th, 2010 | Author: CageCraze.com
This article was originally published at CageCraze.com. Copyright: CageCraze.com.

AAMMA
Billy Donovan, Felicia Wells, Parag Patel, Kim Couture

Parag Patel and Billy Donovan are at the helm of the fastest growing Mixed Martial Arts promotion in the state of Kentucky: Absolute Action MMA. The Northern Kentucky-based organization held its first event in April of 2010 and has gone on to hold six more events this year, with one more event slated for December. Promoter and co-founder, Parag Patel, touts Absolute Action as a “fighter-friendly” organization that is committed to putting on great shows for the fans, taking care of the fighters, and giving back to the local community.

Patel contributes his motivation for starting AAMMA after witnessing a local MMA event in which co-founder, Shane Robinson, broke his hand during a fight. The promoter of that event did not have insurance for the fighters and Robinson was left to deal with the injury and medical bills on his own. Patel knew that fighters like Robinson deserved better and he soon entertained the thought of starting his own promotion:

“I felt that it was time to launch this idealistic venture, putting on a show that I would go to and spend my money on and enjoy the atmosphere. The fighters needed to know that Absolute Action MMA was going to take care of them.” – Parag Patel

Patel soon brought in Billy Donovan, a local MMA fan and businessman, to take on the matchmaking duties for the promotion. Donovan had been a fan of the sport since he was a child and watched a Vale Tudo event on VHS. As a young man Donovan began to go to local MMA events and soon started helping promoters and fighters get more recognition by bringing new fans to the events and introducing them to the fighters. According to Donovan it was a no-brainer to team up with Patel:

“When I received the call from Parag about Absolute Action MMA and helping with the matchmaking I knew instantly this relationship was going to be great. Being around this sport and meeting as many people as I have met over the years, the one thing you don’t find often is someone who is genuine and honest and here was a guy (Patel) doing this just to help propel the sport here locally and help local fighters obtain national attention… I loved hearing his goals and his vision for what he wanted AAMMA to become…” – Billy Donovan

Absolute Action MMA quickly gained support from fighters and fans throughout the Greater Cincinnati area and they have been able to bring in fighters from top gyms in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. The crowning achievement for the promotion was the success of their fifth event, “Battle Against Breast Cancer.” The event marked the first time anyone had ever held an all-female Mixed Martial Arts event in the state of Kentucky. The event was held to raise money for a local support group for survivors of Breast Cancer, The Pink Ribbon Girls.  Absolute Action was able to bring in Kim Couture to fight in the main event, and MMA stars Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, Evangelista Santos, Jan Finney, Jorge Gurgel, and Zoila Frausto were in attendance.

Absolute Action has lived up to their reputation as a fighter-first organization and they continue to impress with the quality of their matchups and the overall production value of the show. When you watch one of their shows you are going to see an actual “event,” not just “fights.” Absolute Action MMA will hold their next event, “AAMMA VIII: A Night to Give Back,” on December 10, 2010 at the Drawbridge Inn in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky. For tickets to the event please visit AAMMA.net .

MMA Big Show Presents “All Or Nothing” On July 17th

mma big show-all or nothingPress Release

MMA BIG SHOW PRESENTS LOCAL FAVORITES CHRIS BENNETT, MOJO HORNE, AND TJ BALL
AS THEY PUT IT ALL ON THE LINE AT “ALL OR NOTHING”

Event to take place live at Belterra Casino Resort & Spa on July 17th

Indiana (USA): MMA Big Show, one of the top fight promotions in the Midwest, will present its next exciting event, “ALL OR NOTHING,” which will take place on July 17th at Belterra Casino Resort & Spa in Indiana. In the main event, big-time local favorite Mojo Horne (7-2) will face one of his toughest tests to date, as he tangles with extremely experienced American Top Team product Lucas Lopes (19-8, fifteen finishes). Also featured on the card will be rising young local prospect “The Samurai” Chris Bennett (0-1 pro, 18-1 amateur), as he attempts to capture his first pro win from Brad Smith (1-1). Another notable local showcased on the fight card will be T.J. Ball (1-1), who will be looking to increase his pro experience against Danny “The Hammer” Surface (3-2). And making his return to Big Show will be Scott Cornwell (1-1), who made his Big Show debut last fall against UFC veteran Junie “The Lunatic” Browning (4-3). Tickets for “ALL OR NOTHING” are priced at $25, $45, and $75, and are available through Ticketmaster, as well as http://www.mmabigshow.com/. 21 and over only, please.

A training partner of Rich Franklin and a former MMA Big Show Middleweight Champion, Mojo Horne was glad to put 2009 behind him, as he suffered the first losses of his pro career. However, he ended the campaign on a high note, as he submitted Kevin Barkdull in the first round at November’s “ONSLAUGHT” event. Now back to his winning ways, Horne is looking to target his title once again in 2010. Standing in his way will be extremely experienced veteran Lucas Lopes. A veteran of 27 MMA fights, Lopes has
fought well-known competitors Sean Salmon and StrikeForce fighter Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, and has defeated UFC welterweight contender Thiago Alves and former UFC fighter Antonio “Samuray” Mendes. Lopes is on a four-fight winning streak, including two straight wins in StrikeForce. Lucas is coming off a KO victory over Robert “Bubba” McDaniel, who previous defeated Mojo via ref stoppage after Horne’s nose was broken. This is Mojo’s opportunity to, in a way, avenge his loss to McDaniel, and come out ahead of a highly experience ATT fighter. Certainly, this will be a difficult test for Horne, but he’s ready to go out there and prove that not only can he beat a veteran like Lopes, he is deserving of a shot at “his” belt. “I’m hoping that if I win this fight, that I’ll be able to fight for my title again. From there, once I get my title back, Jason says he has some plans for me. So I’m excited about that.” What does he think about facing a competitor like his opponent? “I’ve seen some footage on him. He looks like more of a standup fighter. Don’t know much about his ground. The fight footage on him doesn’t show much about the ground. But I’m a firm believer in fighting the fight, not the fighter. So I’m just gonna go in there and do my thing.” And to the fans, Mojo had this to say: “I’m going to do my best for you guys, as I always do. Hopefully, I get the KO or submission, and everyone get’s their money’s worth.”

“The Samurai” Chris Bennett built a name for himself with MMA Big Show fans with his incredibly exciting fights. A real crowd-pleaser, he turned professional earlier this year after piling up eighteen amateur victories. Bennett, currently a 0-1 as a pro, is looking to rebound after a devastating loss to American Top Team’s Tony Simms and prove that he’s a serious contender against Brad Smith at “ALL OR NOTHING.” Additionally, T.J. Ball will be fighting the very tough Danny “The Hammer” Surface, who will be making his pro debut. Both fighters recently dropped to 185 lbs. from their former heavyweight status. As a result, this is going to be a war between two muscle-packed fighters looking to dominate.

Fearsome fighter Scott Cornwell put on a show in the main event of Big Show’s “ONSLAUGHT” in November of 2009. is a Cincinnati native who started learning Tae Kwon Do at the age of three under Master David Huffstutler. As a teenager, Cornwell quickly progressed through the ranks, and currently holds a 3rd degree black belt, winning several local and national tournaments. He also had a very impressive high school wrestling career, where he competed for multiple national teams in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. His amateur mixed martial arts career began in 2007 while training under 4th degree black belt and renowned MMA instructor Rob Gerhardt, and he won his first five amateur fights, amassing an impressive record of 7-2. In preparation for his pro debut, Scott began additional training with Rod Housley at Team Vision while continuing to train and teach at Hamilton-Fairfield Tae Kwon Do. In short, Scott is an excellent striker and wrestler, and is well-versed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
