2011 Ohio Wrestling State Tournament – District Results

State championships can’t be won on the first day of district. But they can be lost.

St. Edward’s wrestling team did little to hurt itself Saturday at the Lorain Division I championship in its quest to unseat reigning champion Wadsworth.

Then again, the Grizzlies proved strong, too, in an incredible day of first-round action.

The Eagles sent 11 individuals to Sunday’s semifinals and have 12 wrestlers left. Wadsworth has 10 in the semis, but has all 13 wrestlers remaining.

“We’re all competitors here,” Wadsworth 125-pounder Kagan Squire said. “You enjoy the competition. You thrive off it and wrestle your best.

“Next weekend, it’s whoever is the hottest. The key this weekend is to get out.”

Squire is one match away from getting out. So are his teammates Brandon Jones (112), Aaron Warstler (119), Alfredo Gray (130), Nate Ball (140), Clay Wenger (145), C.J. Edwards (152), Sheldon Brandenburg (160), Nick Tavanello (215) and Jake Crowley (285).

If the 10 can win one match Sunday, they’ll punch their ticket to state.

St. Edward counters with Edgar Bright (112), Dean Heil (119) Markus Scheidel (125), Colin Heffernan (130), Nick Barber (135), Mark Martin (152), Domenic Abounader (160), Jacob Davis (171), James Suvak (189), Ty Waltz (215) and Greg Kuhar (285) in the semis.

“We’ve been wrestling tough all year against the Blairs and St. Paris Grahams,” Bright said. “We’ve got attitude because we’ve been here before. We know what it’s all about. It’s become a habit to wrestle in matches like this. It pushes you harder to get to state.”

This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

Wrestling fans can watch of two of Pennsylvania’s best middleweights collide with no travel plans for Hershey required.

Just head to Collier Township.

That’s where another dual between Burrell’s Travis McKillop (42-1)  (No. 5 @ 160) and Charleroi’s Cody Wiercioch (30-1)  (No. 4 @ 160) is anticipated at the WPIAL Class AA championships at Chartiers Valley.

Action begins at 5 p.m. today and runs through Saturday evening, when the consensus top two 160-pounders — barring injury or major upset — should collide for the district title.

And this is just the beginning.

McKillop, a senior, and Wiercioch, a sophomore, could end up facing off in the upcoming regional and state tournaments, as well.

“You’ve got not only two of the best guys in the state, but in the country, nationally ranked, who just happen to be in the WPIAL at the same weight,” Burrell coach Ryan Yates said. “We have a couple matches before we see Cody, but these guys are going to be having some battles in the next couple weeks. This is Travis’ last shot to do something special.”

A Dallas High School wrestler collapsed after a match at Silverton High School at 7 p.m. Thursday.

An autopsy determined Engelfried died of a heart condition, Oregon State Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Larry Lewman said. Lewman conducted an autopsy this morning.

Engelfried had an enlarged heart because of an underlying condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Arrhythmia, a disturbance in the heart’s rhythm, caused sudden death, Lewman said.

Lewman said hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common cause of student athlete deaths in Oregon.

Sussex-Morris (NJ) All-Star Meet – Results

Morris County, sparked by three falls, including a pin from Boonton’s state-place winner Eric Fajardo, defeated Sussex County, 30-19, at the second Sussex–Morris All Star meet Friday night at Kittatinny in Hampton.

The event featured seven current Morris County Tournament champions and five 2011 Hunterdon/Sussex/Warren champions along with four region champions and five state place winners, including two-time state champion Nick Francavilla of High Point, from 2010.

Francavilla’s bout at 130 pounds with Montville’s Mike Polizzi was delayed until right before the heavyweight match as a dual meet with Mount Olive caused High Point to not arrive until after the match had already started — but it was worth the wait.

Ohio State Tournament Predictions by Bucksman

This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

Thank you for taking the time to read the State Tournament Predictions Report. This is my eighth year (at least) doing this in some way, shape, or form. Rankings will go 16-deep this year, which is the same as last year. In addition a listing of the top five wrestlers per district will be provided below the rankings. The team standing is based on a state scoring formula that projects points for where each wrestler is ranked (the number to the right of the team/district is the number of ranked wrestlers).

Accuracy in terms of predicting champs:
2004- DI 8/14, DII 10/14, DIIII 10/14
2005- DI 9/14, DII 9/14, DIII 3(or4)/14
2006- DI 10/14, DII 9/14, DIII 7(or8)/14
2007- DI 10/14, DII 8/14, DIII 9/14

Please note that this report is a reflection of the information acquired based on wrestling through the weekend ending January 22nd for Divisions I and II (primarily), and the weekend ending January 29th for Division III. There are two more weekends of wrestling left in this regular season. Also, remember that come the state series, it is a new season. The rankings and summaries carry the value of understanding where one person sees things at this point in time, and also an entertainment factor. However, as the writer of this report, I feel it is important to state: (1) there are matches to be wrestled for a reason (2) it is the upsets, the unexpected, and the thrillers that define state series wrestling (3) if I was somewhat perfect, there would be a different line of employment for me (i.e. psychic or bookie).

These are two predictions that I guarantee to be correct:
*The state tournament will be staged at Value City Arena on the campus of Ohio State University March 3rd through 5th.
*42 wrestlers will be crowned as champions, 14 weight classes across 3 divisions.

All others … there are no guarantees. As the TMQ column on Page2 of ESPN.com states, “All predictions guaranteed to be wrong or your money back!” (just kidding)

Best of luck on the remainder of the season, hope you all achieve the levels of success you wish for, and enjoy the reading!

The Culture & Cure Behind Cauliflower Ear

While wrestling in high school, Greg Harkins said he never wore protective head gear in tournaments or practices because it was too hot and too sweaty; a decision he now regrets.

Over time, Harkins developed a condition called auricular hematoma, which is more widely recognized as cauliflower ear.

Cauliflower ear is a bulbous deformity of the outer ear and is most prevalent among wrestlers, boxers and martial artists.

The condition results from injury to the external ear. When wrestlers compete, friction is created during “head to head” contact or “head to mat” contact. This friction causes a “sheer” injury to the cartilage of the ear. “Sheer” refers to the separation of the cartilage and skin, according to Dr. John Wilson, team physician for the University of Wisconsin-Madison football and wrestling team.

It’s like when football players wear helmets to prevent concussions; they can still get a concussion, there’s just less risk.

Dr. John Wilson

The term cauliflower ear comes from the appearance of the ear once the injury has progressed, often due to repeated blows to the ear from contact with a competitor’s head or the mat. As the condition worsens the cartilage begins to die.

The ear can “shrivel up and fold in on itself” and lighten in color, which creates an appearance similar to cauliflower, according to a report released by Medicine Net.

With traces of cauliflower ear still visible on one of his ears, Dr. Douglas Wyland, an orthopedic surgeon with Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas in Spartanburg, S.C., said he didn’t wear his head gear in practice when he wrestled competitively in college.
