Nearly two years to the day after "MMA Live" first debuted on ESPN.com on May 15, 2008,
the weekly MMA news show this week makes its much-anticipated transition
to cable television.

Hosted by Jon Anik, UFC fighter Kenny Florian and Newark Star Ledger
combat-sports reporter Franklin McNeil, "MMA Live" airs for the first
time on ESPN late Thursday night, May 6, at 1 a.m. ET/10 p.m. PT.

But the half-hour program is just the first of three appearances for the
broadcast team on ESPN2 this week, as "MMA Live" will also host pre-
and post-UFC 113 specials live from the Bell Centre in Montreal.

George Sotiropoulos vs. Kurt Pellegrino set for UFC 116

This article was originally published at Five Ounces of Pain. Copyright: Five Ounces of Pain.

A lightweight matchup between title contenders George Sotiropoulos and Kurt Pellegrino has been pencilled in for UFC 116 on July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The news of the anticipated match up comes courtesy of a recent report from MMAMania.

Sotiropoulos (12-2-0) is currently riding a six-fight win streak and is yet to taste defeat inside the Octagon while Pellegrino (16-4-0) also looks in the best form of his career having won his last four on the trot.

Both men will enter the bout on the back of big hometown victories with the Aussie dominating Joe Stevenson back at UFC 110 in Sydney, Australia and “Batman” throttling Fabricio Camoes at last month’s UFC 111 in Newark, New Jersey.

UFC 116 will be headlined by returning heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar as he puts his title on the line against interim champ Shane Carwin.

In Canada, UFC (111) Killed Competition

dollarsign03The buy rate for “UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy” did approx. 770,000 PPV buys and did very well in Canada.

A much anticipated fight for the UFC welterweight title had champion Georges St. Pierre defend his title against British striker Dan Hardy. The interest in seeing one of the best mma fighters would have definitely pushed the PPV numbers and it should be no surprise that the numbers in Canada were high. GSP has been named athlete of the year, he’s signed a couple of big sponsorship deals with Underarmour and Gatorade. The French Canadian has so many fans throughout the world, that any card he’ll fight on will always draw big numbers.

Updated UFC 111 numbers look to be coming in at around 770,000 buys. With Georges St. Pierre as the headliner, the numbers were strongest in Canada, as the top per capita markets were Halifax, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa. Montreal, Hamilton, Saskatoon, St. John’s, Windsor, Kingston, Burlington (Ont), Regina and Victoria, all Canadian markets. The top U.S. markets were Honolulu, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Seattle, Newark and Denver.

As a contrast, the biggest markets for WrestleMania the next day per capita were Guadalajara, Monterrey (Mexico, not California), Mexico City, Phoenix, Delhi, India, Lima, Peru, Marseille, France, Toronto, New York and Santiago, Chile. We still don’t have Mania numbers, but it looks like UFC beat them in the U.S., which is one that I figured would be close, and that’s still not a definite, just trending patterns show UFC 111 well ahead of Mania in the U.S.

In Canada, UFC killed.

But WrestleMania was far stronger internationally. Montreal is usually not a strong UFC PPV market. It’s a strong live event market, but that’s because a strong percentage of those at a Montreal show actually come from Ontario. It shows St. Pierre’s local fame has grown by a big margin in the past year.

A couple of notes on the numbers courtesy of MixedMartialArts.com.

Note: The PPV estimates are incomplete and still subject to change. We’ve posted the reports to give you an idea of the events progress with the cable companies.

Note II: Interesting that Seattle was one of the top markets, again, for the UFC. White has openly said he’d like to take a show there in the next 12 months and I’d expect that to come sooner, rather than later, if these market reports continue to produce such good results in that market.

Dan Hardy Doesn’t Feel Defeated After Loss To GSP

April 9th, 2010 | Author: TheMMANews.com
This article was originally published at TheMMANews.com. Copyright: TheMMANews.com.

St-Pierre vs HardyAfter suffering his first defeat in eight bouts, British striker Dan Hardy (23-7) doesn’t feel like he’s been beaten.

On March 27th, Hardy stepped into the octagon against UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre for the title in Newark, NJ at “UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy.” The final score was 50-43, 50-44, 50-45 in favor of GSP.

“Obviously GSP won, you look at the scorecard and he was dominant in his victory. But I didn’t feel like I was beaten up in any way, I wasn’t injured, I wasn’t hurt. He took the win from me but he didn’t take the fight from me.

“I wasn’t beaten mentally or physically. I don’t know, it must be frustrating for the fans and it’s frustrating for me because I know that GSP has the kind of potential to make more of a fight out of it. But he’s very good at wrestling and he chooses to stick with the safe option to keep his belt. I mean you can’t hold it against him. It’s not what I would do in his situation but I’m not in his situation right now, so I can’t really make those calls.

“It was just a frustrating fight,” Hardy said. “Obviously it highlighted some shortfalls in my game and some things that I’m going to be able to dedicate myself more to now in the hopes of getting the (championship) belt at some point. But I’m in no way discouraged by it. I feel very positive.”

WEC not closing doors on flyweights but focus is on existing weight classes

Last year World Extreme Cagefighting officials first confirmed the addition of a flyweight division.

More than a year later, though, the organization remains void of flyweights fights, and no bouts are on the horizon.

While in Newark, N.J., for last week's UFC 111 event, WEC General Manager Reed Harris said the organization still plans to do add the 125-pound division but that the promotion's three existing weight classes remain a priority.
