No. 14 High Point (NJ) wins 2011 NJSIAA Group 3 State Championship – Group Results

Billy Hagany and Nick Francavilla (H.M. @ 125)  failed to make their preferred weight Sunday. But when their turns on the mat came around, the two wrestlers for High Point (No. 14 in the Nation) more than made up for it, closing out the Wildcats’ 30-28 victory over South Plainfield for the NJSIAA Group 3 state championship.

High Point (NJ), No. 2 in The Star-Ledger Top 20 state rankings, received back-to-back decision victories from Hagany at 125 pounds and Francavilla, a two-time state tournament champion, at 130 to erase a five-point deficit against top-ranked South Plainfield before 5,050 at Poland Spring Arena on the campus of Toms River North High.

“This is huge compared to an individual title, there is nothing like a team title.”

Nick Francavilla, High Point, 125 lbs.

Hagany weighed in 5 ounces over his usual 119 pounds and Francavilla was 8 ounces over for the 125 limit, forcing coach John Gardner to move each of them up.

The showdown between the state’s top two teams began at 135 pounds, meaning Hagany and Francavilla would close out the meet.

“That was really our secret plan all along,” said Gardner, with tongue planted firmly in cheek. “We told the kids we had to win seven bouts and we did that. And we knew we needed bonus points up top. We got that, too.”

The victory avenged last year’s final, in which South Plainfield (22-4) defeated High Point (22-2), 26-24, in the Group 3 championship match and took The Star-Ledger Top 20 Trophy with it. High Point’s only other group title came in 2008 when the Sussex County team won Group 3.

Andrew Campolattano (No. 1 @ 215) New Jersey’s All Time Win Leader

February 13th, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

Andrew Campolattano (No. 1 @ 215) will enter the final three weeks of his high school career as the state’s all-time victories leaders. Campolattano picked up three victories in a quad meet today to improve to 165-1 in his career.  The 165 wins passes three-time state champion Frank Cagnina of Queen of Peace, who was graduated last year after winning a third state title.

Campolattano embarks on his quest to become the state’s second four-time state champion with the start of the District Tournament on Friday.  Mike Grey of Delbarton is the state’s lone four-time state champion.  Campolattano won his three state titles at 189 pounds and will go for a fourth crown, this time at 215 pounds.

Campolattano recently reneged on a commitment to play football at Rutgers, opting instead to wrestle in college.  He is being courted by many of the top wrestling programs in the nation, including Penn State, Virginia Tech and Rutgers.

New Jersey team fights for 1,000th win

Paulsboro High School’s wrestling team has always celebrated its grand achievements.

Three-hundred consecutive wins in the Colonial Conference.  They hold the national record with Twenty-five straight state Group I titles.

Paulsboro is 999-76-2, an incredible winning percentage of 92.9 percent. The Red Raiders have won 27 Group I state titles, 30 South Jersey crowns and 55 conference championships including 40 in the Colonial Conference.

It was a family atmosphere, and I think that’s why we wrestled at a championship level.

Mike Mendenhall

Tonight, the Red Raiders will add another number to their storied history and it’s a big one.  With a win over Haddon Township, Paulsboro will become just the third high school wrestling team in the country to win 1,000 matches.

“It was a family atmosphere, and I think that’s why we wrestled at a championship level,” said 2002 graduate and state finalist Mike Mendenhall.  “The coaches did a great job of developing that family atmosphere.  They instilled work ethic, and I think that’s what it boils down to.  We worked hard and wanted to be champions.”

#5 St. Paris Graham visits #2 Blair Academy (Jan. 29)

January 26th, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

St. Paris Graham has a chance for redemption this weekend after losing a heart-breaker last Saturday against in-state rival St. Edward.  The loss dropped S.P.G. from #2 to #5 in The National Team Rankings as they get ready to go to Blair Academy this weekend, the new #2  team in the country.

How will St. Paris Graham respond to their seasons first blemish?  We can speculate how big of an impact not having Isaac Jordan (defending state champion) was in deciding the outcome of the St. Edward match.  Graham’s Isaac Jordan (#2 in Ohio) was hoping to be back in the lineup to face St. Ed’s after being inactive for 6 weeks with an injury.  But he wasn’t fully-healthy or match-ready to come back for a showdown against Domenic Abounader, Ohio’s D-I #1 ranked 160-pounder, who pinned Jordan’s replacement in the first period, helping St. Ed’s win the dual meet by 2 points.  Head coach Jeff Jordan needs to rally the team and show they can bounce back after a tough defeat if they want to climb back near the top of the polls and add to their successful 2010-2011 season.

Meanwhile, Blair Academy is on a roll after winning the NHSCA Final Four Duals in Pennsylvania last week, where they beat the #1 ranked teams in New Jersey (54-10) and Washington (70-0).  They seemed to have peaked just in time for Graham coming to town and for next weekend, as they head to Ohio to face St. Edward.  For the season, Blair is undefeated in dual meets, Beast of the East Team Champions and 2nd-place finishers at the Ironman, where St. Paris Graham narrowly won the title.  You can count on head coach Jeff Buxton having Blair Academy ready for Graham this Saturday.

    Projected Lineups:

    St. Paris Graham

    103 – Chase Crabtree
    112 – Ryan Taylor
    119 – Micah Jordan
    125 - Nate Henkle

    140 - Nick Brascetta
    145 - Bo Jordan

    171 - Kyle Ryan
    189 - Huston Evans
    215 - Mark Meyer
    285 - Darrin Bovey

    Blair Academy

    103 – Joseph McKenna
112 – Evan Silver or Max Hvolbek
119 – Caleb Richardson or Evan Silver
125 – Mark Grey or Caleb Richardson
130 – Todd Preston or Mark Grey
135 – Austin Ormsbee or Todd Preston
140 – Russ Parsons or Austin Ormsbee

Andrew Campolattano (#1, 215 lbs.) Withdraws Football Scholarship

Three-time NJSIAA Individual Tournament wrestling champion Andrew Campolattano of Bound Brook High School, one of the best wrestlers in state history, has reneged on his nonbinding commitment to play football at Rutgers University and appears to be leaning toward wrestling in college.

Campolattano, owner of a 150-1 career record who has a chance to join 2006 Delbarton graduate Mike Grey as New Jersey’s only other four-time state wrestling champion, said Tuesday afternoon that he is re-opening the recruiting process. He has won three state championships at 189 pounds, but has moved up to 215 this year.

“”I have to find a place that’s best for me,” said Campolattano, who had drawn serious attention from the wrestling programs at  Ohio State and Penn State before making the non-binding decision to play at Rutgers last spring.

The 215-pound senior, who was a Courier News first-team All-Area football selection last fall at linebacker, said he is leaning toward wrestling in college.

“I’m really opening it up to any of the colleges who are interested,” Campolattano said of the recruiting process. “”It’s both sports, but right now football is a very slim possibility. I’m looking for whatever school is right for me.”

    • Andrew – Here’s wishing you the best, wherever you go. Stay healthy. Use your own head and your own inner guidance to resist the temptations that have derailed so many top athletes. Think about where you will be in 15 years, and look back from there to help you decide what you should be doing now. Never stop working, because in wrestling or football, there are always better guys out there, somewhere. Then when you’re done, you will have no regrets, and everyone will look up to you for the rest of your life. Godspeed.     – Rutgers fan

Blair Academy, 5-0 At NHSCA Final Four

Blair Academy took its fifth straight NHSCA Final Four championship with a 54-10 win over High Point Regional High School, the No. 1-ranked team in New Jersey, Saturday night at Easton Area Middle School in Pennsylvania.  Blair Academy had pins from Mark Grey at 125 pounds, Todd Preston at 130, Patrick Conover at 152, Michael Mocco at 160 and Willie Wilsonn at 215.

“We beat the No. 1 team in New Jersey, we beat the No. 1 team in Washington (Lake Stevens, 70-0); this tournament is a really huge win for us,” said Bucs’ senior Mark Grey, the younger brother of four-time state champion Mike Grey (Delbarton), who posted a huge win of his own, needing just 45 seconds to pin two-time NJSIAA champ Nick Francavilla.

Easton’s hopes to meet Blair in the finals fell quick in the Red Rovers’ first match of the day, a 41-29 loss to High Point.  Easton got a boost from senior Mason McIntyre’s 14-5 dominant performance over John Guzzo (High Point), a New Jersey third-place finisher at 160 in 2010.  The Rovers then tied the match at 29 thanks to a technical fall from Kyle Baker at 103 and a pin by Peter Stanley at 112 but High Point wrapped things up with a pair of pins to close the match.

Easton rallied to sweep the remainder of their matches and defeated Council Rock South 43-23 in the consolation final to capture third place.
