The newly crowned Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal will be putting his championship crown on the line for the first time against dangerous Brazilian striker Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante in August.

FiveOuncesofPain.com recently learned of the anticipated match-up through sources close to the promotion.

The title clash is expected to take place on August 21 from Houston, Texas, while no venue for the event has been announced as of this writing.

Undefeated and widely considered to be among the best light heavyweights in the business, Lawal (7-0) stripped the Strikeforce championship from the waist of Gegard Mousasi during “Strikeforce: Nashville” with a convincing one-sided unanimous decision victory on April 17 of this year. While respected as one of the most dangerous wrestler’s in MMA, Lawal has established a reputation as a knockout artist during his less than two years spent in the sport, finishing 5 of his 7 victories via KO or TKO.

Standing across from Mo in his quest to successfully defend his title for the first time will be another 205 lb. fighter with a nasty reputation in the business as a knockout specialist.

More commonly known by his nickname “Feijao”, Cavalcante (9-2-1) has finished 8 of his 9 victims via KO or TKO. Feijao trains out of the highly respected Black House Gym that includes UFC notables such as Anderson Silva and The Nogueira Brothers. He is currently riding a two-fight win streak that includes stoppages of Antwain Britt and Aaron Rosa after being knocked senseless at the hands of Mike Kyle during “Strkeforce: Lawler vs. Shields” in June of 2009.

The return of Dutch striker and former Strikeforce LightHeavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi will take place at Dream 15 according to MMAJunkie.com. His opponent will be Jake O’Brien, a UFC veteran who has won two fights outside of the promotion.

Mousasi is coming off a devastating loss to Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal at “Strikeforce: Nashville”, a fight that saw Mo take the striker down at will for five rounds en route to a decision victory. Mousasi had previously defeated Renato “Babalu” Sobral to win the Strikeforce championship after winning Dream’s inaugural Middleweight Grand Prix.

O’Brien is making the move down to light heavyweight after defeating Dave Hess and Toni Valtonen on two smaller events. O’Brien is 13-3 and his losses have come to fighters like Cain Velasquez, Jon Jones, and Andrei Arlovski.

This fight will complete the four-man tournament which also includes Melvin Manhoef vs. Tatsuya Mizuno. The winner will be crowned the promotion’s light heavyweight champion.

Nick Diaz vs. ‘Mayhem’ Miller Could Happen Later This Year

Nick DiazDuring Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker talked about wanting to match up welterweight champion Nick Diaz (22-7) against Jason “Mayhem” Miller (23-7) at a future event later this year.

Coker planned to put the two in the cage long before April’s brawl which took part at the “Strikeforce: Nashville” event which was broadcast live on CBS.

“I think ‘Mayhem’ versus Nick Diaz was a fight we were going to promote anyway,” Coker said. “It was just going to be a matter of time. So I think that fight will happen.”

Asked whether the next time we see Miller and Diaz will be against each other, Coker simply responded:

“I believe that fight will happen probably in the next eight months to a year.”

Diaz has won his last 7 bouts, having defeated Hayato Sakurai at DREAM.14 last month in a non-title bout in Japan. He defeated Marius Žaromskis last January in Miami to earn the Strikeforce welterweight title. His last loss was against K.J. Noons in 2007 for the vacant EliteXC lightweight title, a fight which he lost by TKO (cuts).

Miller, meanwhile, is 1-1 in his last two fights having defeated Tim Stout by TKO (punches) at the Nashville event. The loss came to current Strikeforce middleweight champ Jake Shields as both men fought for the vacant title in November at the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers event. Shields earned a unanimous decision in that fight.
