Jason MacDonald Has Four Plates And Twelve Screws Inserted In His Leg

MacDonald vs SalterCanadian middleweight fighter Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald (24-14) had to undergo three hours of surgery on Monday evening to repair his left leg and ankle.

“I had three bad breaks — two on the joint of the fibula, the other was the tibia which was snapped clean off. The doctor explained to me the surgery took much longer than anticipated because he was having trouble keeping the ankle in the proper position because everything was so damaged. I ended up with 12 screws, four steel plates, which are permanent, and two bigger screws that are holding the ligament in place, which will hopefully be removed in three months.”

MacDonald broke it in the opening round of the first bout of UFC 113 in Montreal this past weekend. After kicking opponent John Salter in the head, both men came down awkwardly breaking the Canadians ankle. The fight was immediately stopped and Salter was awarded a TKO victory.

Although he lost the fight, MacDonald’s glad he did it under the UFC banner, great medical coverage and a boss that cares, as well, he’s been invited back by the promotion once he’s better.

“I spoke with Joe Silva that night and he relayed to me it was a freak accident and when it heals I would be given the opportunity to do it again. That makes me feel good. Now I just have to recover. The UFC has called me everyday since to touch base and see how I’m doing. It just goes to show they really do care about the fighters.

I’ve been in so many fights and never got hurt that I suppose it was bound to happen. You play with fire, you’re bound to get burned. But I don’t regret taking the fight. It could have happened any time. It could have happened in my next fight. It could have happened in my previous fight. And if I end up having to retire because of this, at least it’s where I would have wanted it to be. Going out while with the UFC.”

If standard event bonuses are any indication of a particular fight’s entertainment value, then apparently fans were fortunate enough to see the best of the best on Saturday night after it was announced four main card participants would be taking home an additional $65,000 based on their performances at UFC 113. The distinctions were revealed at the post-event press conference and later reported by Sherdog.

The sixth sub of Alan Belcher’s career netted the Duke Roufus product ”Submission of the Night”, while ”Fight of the Night” went to Jeremy Stephens and Sam Stout for their action-packed, split-decision battle.

Meanwhile, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was given yet another reason to smile after winning the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship from the formerly unbeaten Lyoto Machida, as his first-round knockout of “The Dragon” also netted him ”Knockout of the Night” and the sixty-five grand coming with it. The award is Rua’s second in the UFC with the first also coming in Montreal after the Brazilian champ flattened Chuck Liddell at UFC 97 in the bout’s opening frame.

“UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun II” took place on May 8th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The show saw the crowning of a new light-heavyweight champion after Mauricio “Shogun” Rua knocked out the previously undefeated Lyoto Machida in the first round of their main event bout. The next welterweight title challenger was decided after Josh Koscheck earned a unanimous decision victory over Paul Daley. The biggest news from that fight was the Brits actions after the third round bell when he suckered punched his opponent and has been subsequently kicked out of the UFC.

  • UFC 113 Gate totals:
    • - UFC 113 drew a total of 17,647 fans for a live gate total of $3.27 million. The numbers fell short of the previous two events, UFC 97 and UFC 84.
      - UFC 97 holds the record with an attendance record of 21,451 and a gate of $4.9 million.
      - UFC 84 ranks just behind it with an attendance record of 21,390 and a gate total of $5.1 million.
  • Mauricio “Shogun” Rua went in for “the kill” after clipping Lyoto Machida:
    • “When I connected with the overhand right, I already noticed that he was going out,” said Rua, whose finishing sequence. “Then I took the opportunity to punch him on the ground until the referee would stop the fight, but I actually stopped punching a little before the referee stopped the fight. But when we see that opportunity, we go in there for the kill because sometimes in the fight you only have that one opportunity.”
  • New champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua open to facing Anderson “The Spider” Silva:
    • “The only guy I wouldn’t fight is Wanderlei Silva because he’s a great friend of mine,” Rua said. “Other than that, whoever the show wants me to fight, I’ll fight.

      “I’m a professional fighter, so I don’t care.”

  • “Shogun’s” first title defense:
    • “I was just in doing an interview with ESPN and Rashad was all over me about it. Obviously more than likely yes, [Rashad Evans and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson] one of those two is going to get the shot at the title.”
  • Dana White on cutting “Kimbo Slice” from the UFC:
    • “That’s probably Kimbo’s last fight in the UFC,” White said.

“I said that I have a lot of respect for Kimbo and how he’s handled this whole thing – a lot of trash-talking for a couple of years, by me,” White said. “He took me up on my challenge. He came in to ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’ and tonight he got beat by Matt Mitrione. Mitrione was 1-0, and he came in and took Kimbo out tonight.

“I’ve got nothing but respect for Kimbo. I like him as a person. He carried himself really well.”
  • Dana White says Paul “Semtex” Daley is done in the UFC:
    • “He’s done. I don’t give a [expletive] if he’s the best 170-pounder in the world, he’ll never come back here again,” White said in the postfight press conference.

“He’ll never come back. I’m probably the most lenient guy in sports and this is proboably one of the most lenient organziations. You know we’re all human, we all make mistakes, things happen. There’s no excuse for that. These guys are professional athletes. You don’t ever hit a guy blatantly after the bell like that whether you’re frustrated or not.”
  • Josh Koscheck say’s he was hit in the eye:
    • “I just kind of got kneed in the eye,” Koscheck said. “I don’t know if it was a knee or a punch, to be honest with you. I was on my knees and just got hit. I just tried to get a couple seconds to get my bearings and go back in.”
      - Koscheck appeared to take a heavy knee to the head while he was on his rising to stand by opponent Paul Daley. Video review showed that the knee did not connect but Daley was deducted a point anyway.
  • Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald requires surgery for his broken leg:
    • “Broken tibia and fibia and dislocated ankle,” MacDonald posted on his Twitter account late Saturday night. “Surgery tomorrow night.”

    Joe Rogan on the UG:

      - “MacDonald was trying to stop the takedown and his leg got caught under him as he fell backwards. It was nasty. He knew it was broken immediately and called the ref over while he was on the bottom in side control with his leg up in the air and his ankle looking nasty.”
  • Alan Belcher will chase Anderson Silva to light-heavyweight if he has to:
    • “I’ll fight him someday if he keeps winning because I’m going to move up to light heavy after a couple of title defenses. It’s a guarantee that I’ll move up to light heavyweight. I’d like to win the belt first, but I can guarantee I’m going to move up.”

    - Alan Belcher defeated Patrick Cote during the PPV card and felt pretty good defeating someone who lost to the champ in their last fight.

“I feel like I’m getting better every time, and I got to fight someone that’s been in there with the champ, and it makes it a little bit more realistic for me to fight for the title in the future some time,” Belcher said. “I overcame the crowd and getting booed and all that. I overcame a lot of fears and stuff, and I’m just really proud of myself.

“I performed closer to my potential. Maybe I’ll peak whenever I fight for the title.”

UFC 113 has provided weeks' worth of headlines, so it should come as no surprise that this week's edition of The Sunday Junkie - our weekly reader-feedback feature - received a massive number of submissions.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's win over undefeated champion Lyoto Machida, Paul Daley's post-fight cheap shot, Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson's termination, and Montreal's fans were just a few of the topics discussed.

But this week's winning entry came from Iowa's Dylan Wright, who explains why Jon Fitch deserves a title shot over teammate Josh Koscheck.

Lightweight champ Edgar still wants Maynard but comfortable with Penn at UFC 118

MONTREAL - UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar did the unthinkable when he outpointed former belt-holder B.J. Penn in their April meeting at UFC 112.

Now he says he's ready to do it again.

While some MMA fans have expressed their frustration that Penn has been
issued an immediate rematch of the massive upset, Edgar said he welcomes
the challenge and looks forward to proving the first result was no
    fluke.

Patient UFC 113 winner Jeremy Stephens focused on improvement rather than title shot

MONTREAL - If you put Jeremy Stephens on an Ultimate Fighting Championship card - specifically against a fellow striker - fans are likely to get a hell of a show. And "Lil Heathen" is likely to pick up a bonus check.

And though his $65,000 "Fight of the Night" award from Saturday's UFC 113 event is already earmarked for his daughter's future, the 23-year-old striker isn't focused solely on the fight-night awards.

While his heavy hands were needed against fellow striker Sam Stout, Stephens is working toward a Brazilian jiu-jitsi black belt, a well-rounded fighting style, and - when the time is right - a shot at the 155-pound championship.
