Ruben Navejas (No. 15 @ 112) capped an outstanding career at Kentwood by winning the 112-pound crown to finish the season 42-0 — the Conquerors’ first unbeaten wrestler in coach Ken Sroka’s 14-year tenure.

It’s the fourth state medal for Navejas and second gold. He won at 103 as a sophomore. Navejas lost to Tahoma’s Steven Hopkins in the 103 final last year.

“Forty-two match perfection, that’s what I wanted to show,” said Navejas, who raised his career mark to 162-7.

He celebrated with a baseball swing toward the stands, indicating he had knocked one out of the park — an idea he borrowed from a wrestling buddy in Missouri.

Neosho senior Dallas Smith finally earned that gold medal that had eluded him his entire high school wrestling career after dominating Warrensburg’s Cody Johnston (No. 12 @ 189) in one of the best finals matches featured at the 2011 MSHSAA Wrestling Championships Saturday at Mizzou Arena.

Smith, a four-time state qualifier, can now add his gold medal at 189 pounds to his collection of bronze earned in 2010 and fourth place in 2009. Smith finished his senior season with a 50-2 record, and the pleasure of being a part of a senior class that won back-to-back Class 3 state titles in 2011 and 2010, second place in 2009 and fourth place in 2008.

In his finals match against Johnston, the two wrestlers battled hard in a scoreless first period. Johnston nearly recorded a takedown late in the period, but Smith scrambled out of the hold.

Smith scored an escape point early in the second period, and later followed that up with a takedown with two seconds remaining in the frame.

In the third period, Smith sealed the win with a two-point near fall as it was evident Johnston was running out of energy.

A former super heavyweight who once competed at over 300 pounds, the 27-year-old Riggs (32-12) is now a dangerous threat in multiple STRIKEFORCE divisions. He holds the rare distinction of having competed at heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight, and welterweight during the course of his eight-year career.

A former UFC star, Riggs holds notable victories over STRIKEFORCE Welterweight champ Nick Diaz, Kendall Grove, Chris Lytle and “The N.Y. Badass” Phil Baroni. He is coming off a controversial unanimous decision loss to streaking, former world champ Jay Hieron at STRIKEFORCE: Miami on Jan. 30, 2010.

Prior to the loss to Hieron, the 6-foot Riggs tallied up four consecutive wins including an impressive unanimous decision victory over Baroni at STRIKEFORCE: Lawler vs. Shields on June 6, 2010 in St. Louis, Mo.

Taylor (6-1), of Chicago, has rattled off two consecutive knockout wins since his first career loss to Nate Moore on the undercard of the STRIKEFORCE and M-1 GLOBAL: Fedor vs. Rogers event in Hoffman Estates, Ill. on Nov. 7, 2009.

The 5-foot-11 Taylor has scored knockouts in four of his six consecutive victories and has only gone to the judges scorecards once in his professional career.

Josh Thomson Is Giving Brock Lesnar A Punchers Chance Against Cain Velasquez.

Former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson thinks that UFC champion Brock Lesnar only has a puncher’s chance of beating Cain Velasquez, who is a teammate of his at AKA in San Jose. Thomson, who’s coming off a submission victory over Pat Healy despite breaking two ribs early in the bout, recently used Facebook to express his thoughts on the upcoming(though there’s no date decided) heavyweight bout:

“Cain is wrestling every day with this years NCAA Div 1 national champ from MO. who is about 280lbs and let me tell you that Cain coming off a knee surgery 4wks ago is getting takedowns just fine as well as not losing any. Cain is a better wrestler/striker/MMA fighter than Brock but like you said, Brock is bigger with a huge punch. That is the only chance I give Brock though is a punchers chance cuz I don’t see him holding Cain down “IF” he can get the takedown.”

Lesnar vs. Velasquez should be an interesting fight, with MMA fans lining up to tout the virtues of both fighters. No official word on when it will take place, with UFC hoping for September but Lesnar seeming to want to take some time to be with family, and for farming. We’ll keep you up to date.
