Antonio McKee’s return to the ring has put been temporarily put on hold due to a knee injury sustained in training meaning the outspoken lightweight will no longer be able to defend his Maximum Fighting Championship title this Friday night at MFC 28 against Drew Fickett. McKee last fought on New Year’s Day at UFC 125 resulting in a one-and-done stint inside the Octagon after falling by way of Split Decision to Jacob Volkmann.
Fickett will still see action at the event and has been linked to a bout with 15-2 grappler Matt Veach in a catch-weight clash at 160 pounds.
News of the change in circumstances was relayed to media by way of an official announcement from the organization.
Fickett is 40-13 in his career and was considered to be on his way to stardom with past wins over Kurt Pellegrino, Josh Koscheck, and Ken Florian before personal problems stymied his ascension in the sport. However, the 31-year old has won his last four fights including three in a single evening last September en route to winning Shine Fights’ 155-pound Grand Prix.
His opponent, Veach, has also emerged from the ring with his hands raised the last four times he’s entered it including a trio of decision victories. Fans may remember the teammate of Matt Hughes’ at H.I.T. Squad based on his recent run in the UFC where Veach debuted with an opening round TKO of Matt Grice before dropping back-to-back bouts including a submission loss to current lightweight champ Frank Edgar.
In addition to Fickett’s fight with Veach “MFC 28: Supremacy” will also feature in-ring appearances from notable names like Ryan Jimmo, Thomas Denny, and Rodney “Sho Nuff” Wallace. Fans can tune in to watch things unfold live on HDNet starting at 10:00 PM EST.Similar Posts:

Mixed martial arts veteran Drew Fickett (40-13) has had a rough few years, which included a five fight losing streak, but has seen things pick up in 2010 when he defeated three opponents in one night to win the Shine Fights lightweight Grand Prix last September.
This Friday he was to have met Maximum Fighting Championship lightweight champ Antonio McKee for the belt at MFC 28, but an injury forced McKee off the card. With a week to go the promotion found a replacement in Matt Veach, someone Fickett feels is just as dangerous of an opponent, but feels the result will be the same, his hand raised in victory at the end of the fight.
In an interview with MMAWeekly.com Fickett talked to them about finding new motivation for fighting and how he hopes that exciting wins will help him get into one of the big promotions.
“I’m more motivated than I’ve ever been. I look at fighting as not just a passion, but as a career. I look at it as a responsibility and hold myself accountable for my lifestyle. I have a daughter and there’s a lot more on the line now than when I was just a young kid in college wrestling…I just want to be the best Drew Fickett ever. Now after I’ve built my confidence and I’m in shape and I’m fight-ready, I can smoke anybody at lightweight. It’s not about just winning – it’s about dominating my fights. I’m a fighter’s fighter and I like to fight the best competition out there, and the best competition just happens to be in Strikeforce, the UFC, and some of the bigger events, so I’d like to get in those shows so I can fight the best guys.”
Fickett meets Veach this Friday, Feb. 25, in the co-main event of MFC 28: Supremacy at the River Cree Casino in Edmonton, Alberta. The main card will air live on HDNet.

Press Release – Maximum Fighting Championship lightweight title-holder Antonio McKee will be unable to defend his title at MFC 28: Supremacy due to a knee injury. Drew Fickett, McKee’s scheduled opponent for the co-main event, will maintain his spot on the card in a showdown against replacement Matt Veach (15-2). The Fickett-Veach encounter will be a three-round bout contested at a catchweight of 160 pounds.
“I’m disappointed not to be facing McKee for the title but it’s only a matter of time until I get my hands on the MFC lightweight belt,” said Fickett.
“It’s truly a sign of what some fighters are made out of,” added MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. “Drew Fickett didn’t hesitate one bit to accept the change in opponent, and Matt Veach showed the amount of courage he’s got in taking the fight with Fickett on short notice.”
Veach, who will be fighting on the same event as his H.I.T. Squad teammate Robert Washington, has won four straight fights and holds seven career victories via submission. This will be a return to the Maximum Fighting Championship for the 29-year-old who previously captured a decision win over Matt MacGrath at MFC 16 in May 2008.
Among his other notable victories, Veach, a former junior college All-American wrestler, earned a decision verdict over British knockout artist Kenneth Rosfort-Nees along with a first-round knockout of Matt Grice. Veach’s career was launched with a perfect run of 11 consecutive wins.
The only two setbacks in the career of the five-foot-seven native of Granite City, Illinois, came against top-ranked competitors Frankie Edgar and Paul Kelly.

Press Release – (18 February 2011): Winning a title in the Maximum Fighting Championship is a difficult challenge.
Holding onto the belt has proven to be an even greater battle. And certainly in the case of the MFC’s world light-heavyweight title, maintaining the role of champion has not been an easy task.
While the belt has been an attractive treasure for several fighters over the years, there’s been very little longevity to any title reign. In fact only once has the MFC’s 205-pound division crown been defended successfully by its holder.
So when Dwayne “D-Bomb” Lewis and Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo square-off for the light-heavyweight gold at MFC 28: Supremacy, they go into the fight knowing that just winning the belt isn’t good enough. They have the opportunity to not just claim the crown but to also start on a quest to be the MFC’s longest-serving light-heavyweight champ.
“It’s been a pretty long journey for me in the MFC and I’ve been aiming to get that belt so winning it would be huge,” said Jimmo, who will be riding a 13-fight winning streak into the matchup. Included in that streak is a decision victory over Lewis, though there have been some significant changes since that original clash at MFC Unplugged 3 in 2007.
A previously tentative Lewis has found a more aggressive side that has resulted in eight knockout wins. Jimmo, meanwhile, has maintained a very deliberate style, but has flashed a mean streak on rare occasions such as the second-round assault on Wilson Gouveia at MFC 25.
“All I’m doing is refining the system that I use because it has been successful for me,” noted Jimmo. “I’ve been training hard, and training with more consistency than I did for my last fight. I’ve been training for a five-round fight. Dwayne is very dangerous with that KO power so if I do see the opportunity to end the fight that’s what I’ll do.”
One past MFC light-heavyweight champ took that sentiment to heart – finish the fight when the opportunity presents itself. Roger Hollett, the second man to hold the title, pounced on a fallen Victor Valimaki to take his belt only 2:06 into their matchup at MFC 13. But Hollett’s reign was a short one, in part affected by a serious knee injury, yet upon coming back, he surrendered the belt to Emanuel Newton at MFC 19 in a five-round decision. And Hollett would further tumble down the rankings in his next effort when he was the victim of a shocking first-round submission at MFC 20 against David Heath.
Newton lasted only one encounter as the man in the division, however, as he was narrowly beaten by Trevor Prangley at MFC 21 – this too in a fight that went the distance, though it was an entertaining scrap particularly a wild fifth round that saw both men hit the canvas at the final bell. Like Hollett, Newton also would take another tumble after losing his belt when he dropped a decision to Jimmo at MFC 23. Newton will look to regain his footing in the MFC’s rankings when he meets Rodney Wallace at MFC 28.
Valimaki, in fact, was the only former champ who successfully defended the belt. He claimed the title at MFC 10 with a quick submission win over Jason Day, and then held off a hard-hitting Jared Kilkenny before scoring the knockout at 3:26 of Round 1 in their main-event tussle at MFC 11.
