NEW YORK (April 22, 2010) – Former Rickson Gracie protégé and highly confident middleweight (185 pounds) “King” Kevin Casey (3-1) of Los Angeles will face the toughest test of his Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) career when he faces former Olympic wrestling silver medalist and MMA superstar Matt “The Law” Lindland (21-7) of Oregon City, Ore., in the STRIKEFORCE Challengers main event at Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Ore. on Friday, May 21.
A welterweight (170 pounds) battle between undefeated rising star “Relentless’’ Roger Bowling (7-0) of Columbus, Ohio, who’ll be making his STRIKEFORCE debut, and hard-hitting brawler “Vicious” Bobby Voelker (21-7) of Kansas City, Kan., has been added to the card.
In previously announced matchups, promising, unbeaten welterweight Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (6-0) of St. Louis will face local favorite Nathan Coy (8-2) of Portland while Kerry Vera (2-0), of San Diego, Calif., and Julianna “The Venezuelan Vixen” Pena (2-0) of Spokane, Wash., will collide in a battle of 135-pound female prospects.
Tickets are on sale at the Rose Garden Box Office, all participating Safeway/TicketsWest outlets, or by calling (877) 789-ROSE (7673). They also can be purchased online at www.ComcastTIX.com and STRIKEFORCE’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).
Casey, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert schooled by famed master Rickson Gracie, won his first start in 13 months with a dominant, first round (1:41) submission (rear-naked choke) of Chad Vance at STRIKEFORCE: Challengers last Nov. 20 in Kansas City.
The multi-talented Casey is also a hip-hop artist as well as a friend and business partner of MTV reality series superstar and Beverly Hills socialite, Spencer Pratt. Casey recently recorded the single, “No Surrender.”
Lindland captured the silver medal in Greco Roman wrestling while representing The United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics. A former All-American wrestler for University of Nebraska and the 1993 NCAA Big Eight conference champion, the 39-year-old will look to return to his winning ways after suffering two consecutive defeats.
The six-foot Lindland lost his last outing on a first- round submission (arm triangle choke) to superstar Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at STRIKEFORCE: Evolution on Dec. 19, 2009. During a stellar 13-year MMA career, Lindland has fought the best, including the famed Fedor Emelianenko, and has triumphed over a number of all-time greats, among them former UFC champions Pat Miletich and Carlos Newton.
Two years ago, Lindland entered the world of politics, winning the Oregon Republican Party’s nomination for the House of Representatives before being defeated in the general election.
Nothing short of a wrecking machine, Bowling has been rolling since making his MMA debut in June 2007. The five-foot-nine, 28-year-old registered six consecutive first-round victories at the outset of his career before he had to settle for a 0:14, second-round TKO (punches) over Jerrod Appenzeller in his last start last Feb. 10.
The six-foot-one Voelker, who specializes in American Jiu-Jitsu, has won four of his last five fights, including a dramatic, come-from-behind second-round TKO (punches) over Erik Apple at the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event last Nov. 20 in Kansas City.
A pro since February 2006, Voelker was rocked and dropped early in the opening round. But the momentum began to change by midway through the five-minute session.
Near the conclusion of the round, Voelker had assumed control, dropped Apple with an overhand right early in the second, pounced on his crumpled opponent and brought about a stoppage at the 1:23 mark of the round.
Rose Garden Arena doors will open for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at 5:15 p.m. The first preliminary card bout will begin at 6 p.m. and the first main card bout will begin at 8 p.m.
The event will be televised live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

PORTLAND (April 12, 2010) –Middleweight (185 pounds) Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) superstar and former Olympic wrestling silver medalist Matt “The Law” Lindland (21-7) will return to the cage in the main event of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon on Friday, May 21.
Undefeated, rising star Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (6-0) will face off with fellow welterweight (170 pounds) Nathan Coy (8-2) while 135 pound female prospects Kerry Vera (2-0) and Julianna “The Venezuelan Vixen” Pena (2-0) will collide with one another on the card.
A special pre-sale ticket purchase opportunity for the first STRIKEFORCE event in the state of Oregon will take place for “STRIKEFORCE Insider” e-newsletter subscribers (http://strikeforce.com/insider.html) from 10 a.m. PT on Wednesday, April 14, until 10 p.m. PT on Thursday, April 15. STRIKEFORCE Insiders will receive a special e-newsletter with the pre-sale code
Tickets for the event go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. PT on Friday, April 16 and can be purchased at the Rose Quarter Box Office, all participating Safeway/ TicketsWest outlets, or by calling 877.789.ROSE (7673), as well as online at ComcastTIX.com and STRIKEFORCE’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).
Lindland, who captured the silver medal in Greco Roman wrestling while representing The United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics, is also a former All-American wrestler for University of Nebraska and the 1993 NCAA Big Eight conference champion. The 39-year-old will look to re-enter the win column after two consecutive defeats, the last of which he suffered by way of first round submission (arm triangle choke) to superstar Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at STRIKEFORCE: Evolution on December 19, 2009.
During his stellar 13 year MMA career, the 6 foot Lindland, who hails from Oregon City, Oregon, has triumphed over a number of all-time greats including former UFC champions Pat Miletich and Carlos Newton.
Two years ago, Lindland entered the world of politics, winning the Oregon Republican Party’s nomination for the House of Representatives before being defeated in the general election.
One of MMA’s fastest rising stars, the undefeated, 28-year-old Woodley of St. Louis, Missouri is a two-time All-American NCAA wrestler for University of Missouri. His superior wrestling skills have been the foundation of his success in the cage, leading him to submission victories over each of his opponents, including his last victim, Rudy Bears, whom Woodley tapped out with an arm triangle choke in the first round (2:52) of their main event matchup at the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Kansas City, Kansas’ Memorial Hall on November 20, 2009.
Woodley’s opponent, Coy, is also an expert in submissions and a former wrestling star for Oregon State University. Coy will put a three fight winning streak on the line that began with a first round (3:39) TKO of Jesse “J.T.” Money Taylor on July 25, 2009.
In his last start, Coy forced Travis Bush to tap out from strikes just 16 seconds into their meeting at Spirit Mountain Casino in Grande Ronde, Oregon on March 12.
The 28-year-old Vera, the wife of MMA star Brandon Vera and resident of San Diego, California, made a splash debut with STRIKEFORCE on November 20, 2009 when she battered Kim Couture with superior striking skills and brought about a TKO in the first round (3:35) of their matchup with an onslaught of punches.
Vera gained the attention of the fight world by winning the Oxygen television network women’s Muay Thai fight reality series Fighter Girls in 2007.
Inspired by Bruce Lee movies and The Karate Kid at the age of six, Vera, a tomboy, took up Tae Kwon Do and, later, boxing and kickboxing before turning to world’s fastest growing spot – MMA.
The 20 year old Pena, a product of Sik Jitsu in Spokane, Washington, possesses a fast-paced, aggressive fighting style which, oddly enough, mimics that of her boyfriend, undefeated lightweight scrapper Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm.
In her last start, Pena engaged in an all out slugfest with Stephanie Webber, before submitting Webber with an armbar in the second round (2:54) of action.
Pena, whose pretty smile is a stark contrast to her darker side, has ambitions that extend beyond the cage. To date, she has been using her earnings from competition to further her education at Spokane Community College.

KANSAS CITY (March 8, 2010) – Tyler Stinson, a 24-year-old native of Winfield, Kan., was the unanimous winner of an open tryout sponsored by Bellator Fighting Championships on Saturday, earning him a chance to fight in Bellator’s upcoming nationally-televised event at the Kansas City Power & Light District on April 29th.
Stinson was one of 72 fighters from as far away as New York, California, Texas and Arizona to travel to Lenexa, Kan., for the tryout, which was judged by Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney and a panel of other top Bellator talent executives. Participants included former veterans of the WEC, IFL and other top promotions.
“The talent level that we saw at this tryout was very solid,” Rebney said. “To have fighters come in on busses, trains and planes from around the country is very humbling. These guys just want a shot and I only wish that we could give that opportunity to every one of them. Our decision was a difficult one, but Tyler separated himself with great grappling and a well-rounded MMA arsenal. I’m looking forward to seeing him fight on April 29th.”
Stinson, though just 24, boasts a professional record of 16-5 in a wide variety of regional promotions across the Midwest and in Florida. Notably, he is one of only two fighters to notch a victory against 17-2 Eric Marriott, a competitor in Bellator’s upcoming eight-man featherweight tournament. Stinson will enter the April 29th Bellator event on a three-fight win-streak with all three wins coming via first round stoppages (armbar, triangle choke and TKO-punches).
“This whole experience was just awesome,” Stinson told reporters after the event. “To hear my name called at the end of the day was just unbelievable. I’m really almost speechless right now. Bellator is just such a great organization and I’m excited for the chance to fight in front of my family and friends in Kansas City.”
The second-place finisher at the event was 27-year-old Leonardo Pecanha, a native of Brazil now fighting out of Omaha, Neb. Pecanha, who boasts a pro record of 11-6, is now being considered by Bellator for an open slot at one of its May events.
The April 29th event is one of four that Bellator will be staging at the highly popular Kansas City Power & Light District. The Power & Light District encompasses multiple square blocks in the heart of Kansas City’s downtown area and features an exciting blend of restaurants, nightlife, and shopping, welcoming in excess of 6 million visitors annually.
Tickets are on sale now at Tickemaster.com, at the Midland Theater box office downtown, and in select Power & Light District venues. Check out www.powerandlightdistrict.com for more information on ticket availability.
Additional Bellator fights will be held at the Kansas City Power & Light District on:

- August 26, 2010 – Bellator XXVII
- October 14, 2010 – Bellator XXXIV

Professional Mixed Martial Arts fighters with valid Federal ID cards are encouraged to sign up. The open tryouts will be held in a cage and will include grappling and bag-striking. Competitors will be judged by Bellator Fighting Championships executives and officials. To participate, fighters must provide proof of at least two professional fights. Participants are expected to bring their Federal I.D. and their own protective gear.
“This tryout is the kickoff event for a spring and summer of excitement the likes of which Kansas City hasn’t seen before,” said Nick Benjamin, executive director of the Power & Light District. “It’s a great opportunity for a local talent to make his name in front of thousands of his fellow Kansas Citians in Kansas City Live!1—and the millions who’ll be watching on national TV—during the first main event on April 29.”
Tickets for the event go on sale March 6 at Tickemaster.com and at the Midland Theater box office downtown. Tickets will also be available at the tryout event and in select Power & Light District venues. Check out www.powerandlightdistrict.com for more information on ticket availability.
