Iowa City West (No. 8) defeated Southeast Polk 40-23 to advance to the Class 3-A championship match at the state duals wrestling meet.

The Trojans will face Bettendorf (No. 19), which outlasted traditional state champion Waverly-Shell Rock (No. 21) 31-22.

Southeast Polk’s Cory Clark survived an upset bid in a semifinal, beating Kegan Wakefield of Iowa City West 7-5. Clark used three takedowns to build a 7-1 lead before giving up a reversal.

Clark was penalized for stalling and for an illegal hold in the third period, but was able to hang on to run his career record to 132-0. Clark beat Wakefield last Saturday in the 119-pound championship match at the traditional state wrestling meet.

Clark’s day is not done though. The Rams will face Waverly-Shell Rock in a third-place match later today.

Inspiring Kids to Participate in Amateur Wrestling Through MMA

Randy Couture remembers the path his life was supposed to follow. He would put his foreign language and literature degree to good use as a high school teacher, and his background as an All-American wrestler to work as a coach.

Those were the days before mixed martial arts, back when something called the “Ultimate Fighting Championship” was only beginning to give birth to an entirely new sport. The former NCAA runner-up at Oklahoma State was content trying out for the Olympics, helping young wrestlers in high school and college, and scraping together enough money for a decent living.

As school wrestling programs are put on chopping blocks across the country, either to reach Title IX compliance or save a few bucks in a down economy, mixed martial arts is providing the centuries-old sport some salvation. Kids interested in professional fighting without access to trainers or gyms are giving it a lift – simply by walking into wrestling rooms again.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, more than 355,000 high schoolers competed on 9,772 teams during the sport’s high-water mark in 1977, back when Dan Gable was an Olympic hero and the United States was a force on the international scene.

By 1995, more than 1,200 of those programs had been cut and participation was at 217,000.

Phillip Laux (No. 4 @ 103) and Jack Hathaway (No. 14 @ 125) Earn State Titles for Iowa City West

In an event where the celebrations are almost as entertaining and exciting as the action that create them, Phillip Laux (No.4 @ 103) was reserved and business-like similar to his performance. Laux scored five takedowns beating West Des Moines Valley’s Jake Koethe, 12-3, in the 103-pound championship.

Laux avoided any demonstrations or leaps into a coach’s arms and signed his bout sheet and left the mat area.

“I have to think of this as just another tournament,” Laux said. “Even after the state tournament there is more work to be done.”

His teammate Jack Hathaway (No.14 @ 125) didn’t let anything slow him down, including head trauma. Hathaway complained of a possible concussion suffered during the first takedown in a 6-1 win over Bettendorf’s Connor Ryan at 125.

Hathaway said he smacked heads with Ryan as he scored his first takedown and saw flashes, which persisted throughout the match. he was still able to add another escape and takedown.

“I tried to stay focused on the match though,” Hathaway said. “It wasn’t the toughest thing to do but it wasn’t very easy either.

“I wanted it pretty bad. I worked my butt off this year.”

Justin Koethe (HM @ 160) DQ’d for Illegal Slam

This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

The boo birds were chirping Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

They were protesting a decision made by an athletic trainer from Iowa State University that ended the 160-pound semifinal match at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament between Sioux City East’s Ethan Lara and top-ranked Justin Koethe (HM @ 160) of Iowa City West.

Lara dislocated his left shoulder when he was illegally slammed to the mat late in the first period. He trailed 4-3 at the time, but he was declared the winner by injury default and qualified for tonight’s state finals.

“He’s fine,” East coach Vince Pederson said of Lara (22-4), the lone Northwest Iowan to advance to the finals.
