UFC lightweight fighter Dan Lauzon (12-4) has had a chance to reflect on all of the events up to, and including, his unanimous decision loss to Efrain Escudero at UFC 114.
Lauzon received some tough love from his brother Joe Lauzon, and coaches Joe Pomfret and Steve Maze, all three laid an ultimatum at his feet basically stating ‘train harder or your on your own.’
Lauzon felt a betrayed but in the end completed his preparations for the UFC 114 bout on his own, bringing in someone else to corner him for the fight. Dan was on his own and felt relieved not having his brother Joe in his corner.
“It was actually a little bit easier going out there without my brother. Sometimes when I have him in my corner I feel like it’s a lot of pressure,” said Dan Lauzon, who hasn’t heard from UFC since the loss. “My brother puts a lot a lot of pressure on me to win and I don’t really fight that well when I’m put under a lot of pressure like that. It was the most fun I had in a fight in a long time, since my first or second fight. I was just happy to be out there.”
His loss to Escudero helped to open his eyes to help him understand the message his brother and coaches were trying to tell him. He needs to train harder and to do that he has to leave his comfort zone of training near home.
“It sucks going into a fight and being at the end and being like `wow you’re about to lose this fight because you’re too fatigued,” Lauzon said. “I’ve never really felt like that in a fight. I don’t want to feel like that again. I’m sick and tired of sitting around, feeling sorry myself and this and that. I want to get up, train hard, get motivated and live up to my potential. Right now I’m just not. I’m training but I’m not focused on the right things.
“I need to start living outside the gym as a fighter, and inside the gym train like a fighter.”
Luckily for him Daniel Gracie phoned after the fight to offer him a chance to come to New York and train at the Renzo Gracie Academy. It looks as if the younger Lauzon will take the offer as he prepares for his next fight but the lightweight hasn’t heard from the UFC and is sporting a 0-3 record with the promotion.
His time with the UFC could be at a close for now, which will only mean a tougher road ahead but it appears to be one Dan Lauzon is willing to try.

Joey “Mexicutioner” Beltran (12-3) is two for two since making his UFC debut in February. The heavyweight defeated Rolles Gracie at UFC 109 and Tim Hague at UFC 113 in those two fights to extend his win streak to three. Now he’ll meet “TUF 10″ fighter Matt Mitrione at UFC 119 in the fall.
Mitrione is coming off a big victory over Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson, something Beltran acknowledges but notes it won’t matter anyway, he plans on smashing Mitrione when they meet on Sept. 25 in Indianapolis.
“That a huge fight. Everybody’s on his jock right now. Obviously, Matt is fresh off his win against Kimbo Slice. I’m just gonna come in and smash him. You know, I like Matt and Matt’s actually shown great improvement. I actually think that now is the perfect time to get him ‘cuz he is only gonna get beter. He is athletic, he is huge, he is a big guy. The whole Kimbo thing, that was ridiculous that he got a chance to be in the UFC, but it is what it is with him. He is a huge marketing tool and he did what he did and props to him for making money for his family. That’s what it’s all about at the end of the day.”
More of the “Mexecutioner’s” interview can be found at FightHype.com.
