The former professional kick boxer was a four-time Brazilian Muay Thai champion. Rizzo won his MMA pro debut via a first-round knockout of Eric Labaille on October 26, 1996. He extended his win streak to nine, including notable triumphs against David “Tank” Abbott (KO1) in UFC: Ultimate Brazil and Mark Coleman (DEC1), before dropping a 5-round decision to Kevin Randleman in their 2000 UFC heavyweight championship fight. “The Rock” responded with back-to-back wins versus Dan Severn (SUB1) and Josh Barnett (KO2), setting up a UFC heavyweight title fight against legendary Randy Couture, who won a decision and six months later, Couture stopped Rizzo on strikes in the third-round of their rematch for the title.
In 2002, Rizzo put Andrei Arlovski to sleep on punches in the third round, but Pedro dropped consecutive fights to Gan McGee (TKO1), and Vladimir Matyushenko (DEC3) to start 2003. A key victory came against MMA veteran Ricco Rodriguez (DEC3).
In a fight against Jeff Monson on September 1, 2007, Rizzo registered a third-round win, in the first pay-per-view event promoted by Art of War. On July 19, 2008, Rizzo fought Josh “The Babyface” Barnett in Affliction Entertainment’s Day of Reckoning and lost, 2nd round 1:44 KO (Punch) .
The main event for the “Uprising” series in Brisbane is a much anticipated event. Josh Barnett is a highly tactical, sound fighter whose world-class submission wrestling skills are notorious. Animated by his trademark humor and bravado, he is one of the top ten ranked heavyweights in MMA and a celebrated wrestling star in Japan. Although his grappling base comes from catch-wrestling, he has an evolved fighting style that combines a well-rounded standup and ground game. Barnett also has size, strength, and conditioning on his side. Barnett has fought in every major fight organization in the world and was scheduled to fight against Fedor for Affliction Entertainment’s Trilogy prior to being disqualified for failing his medical tests. This will be Barnett’s first fight since his disqualification in the U.S., while “Mondragon” has been training all of his life for this moment to take on “The Babyfaced Assassin.”
The 29-year-old “Mondragon” has an impressive record having taken down opponents in 23 professional fights. Prior to losing to Edson Conterraneo at Jungle Fight 17, Dos Santos finished off each of his previous seven opponents, the past three inside the first round. Dos Santos amazed the Brazilian mixed martial arts community when he stopped Assuerio Silva on strikes in just 61 seconds at Jungle Fight 15. He followed the performance with back-to-back first-round submissions against Douglas Humberto and Fabio Monstro.
“The Uprising,” is presented by Impact FC, Saturday, July 17th, 2010 at 10 PM ET/7 PM PT in the United States from local pay-per-view providers for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

Following his six second knockout loss on May 13 to Hector Lombard in a nationally televised bout, Jay Silva will not compete for Matrix Fights (www.MatrixFights.com) on June 11 at “The Arena” in Philadelphia as had been previously scheduled.
Replacing Silva against rising East Coast middleweight prospect Tim Williams will be New Hampshire native, Woody “The Dynasty” Weatherby, 8-3.
Weatherby, renowned for his strong striking ability, will compete for the first time since appearing on the current eleventh season of the hit Spike TV reality show The Ultimate Fighter.
Weatherby is a former Naval officer who currently splits his time as a corrections officer for the Hillsborough County Jail in Manchester, NH while also training MMA at both the Renzo Gracie Academy in Derry, NH and Mickey Ward’s Boxing Gym.
Williams is 3-0 since turning pro last November following an outstanding amateur career that saw him post a perfect 6-0 record with six early stoppages. All three of Williams’ pro fights have ended in the first round, with his most recent victory, a first round submission win over Joey Kirwan, earning him the Locked in the Cage middleweight title.
On June 11, Weatherby will represent Williams’ toughest test to date.
“Timmy has never lost a fight as a pro or amateur,” remarked Matrix Fights promoter Phil Migliarese. “He doesn’t know what it means to fail. Being so dominant everyone is talking about him on the East Coast. But to the rest of the country, he’s still a well kept secret. A win over Weatherby would change everything for him overnight.”
The night’s co-main event will also feature undefeated light heavyweight prospect Tim Carpenter, 5-0, taking on Guybson Sa, 1-0, who trains out of the renowned Team Bomb Squad. Carpenter, a black belt under Phil and Ricardo Migliarese, is 1-0 since returning to active competition following an extended hiatus due to injury.
Following a unanimous decision victory this past February against Rich Lictawa at an Adrenaline MMA event, Carpenter immediately returned to the radar of most major MMA organizations. A second straight win could propel him from the regional circuit and onto the national scene.
Also featured on the pro card for Matrix Fights II on June 11 will be Brylan Van Artsdalen, who recently made his professional debut on a nationally televised Bellator Fighting Championships event at the Mohegan Sun Hotel & Casino in Uncasville, CT.
“Brylan is coming off a tough loss, but it was a fight he was clearly winning,” said Matrix Fights President Jimmy Binns. “Not every fighter can say they made their debut for a major national promotion televised on Fox Sports Net, NBC, and Telemundo. But Brylan was one of the top ranked amateurs in the country and earned that spot. I know losing a fight that he was dominating must be frustrating to him but on June 11 he’ll get his chance to make things right.”
The undercard will feature a stacked lineup of top rated amateurs from renowned schools and academies such as Daddis Fight Camps, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu United, and Balance Studios. Additionally, the undercard will feature the first ever female MMA bout in Matrix history when Andria Caplan returns to the cage against Jennifer Martin.
Caplan, who has been featured in the past on MMAjunkie.com and most recently in the Philadelphia City Paper, is a former WKA Amateur Muay Thai Champion as well as a multi-time Grappler’s Quest Champion.
Making her MMA debut last August on a nationally televised M-1 Global event, Caplan will be looking to redeem herself after losing to ISCF amateur MMA champion Mollie Ahlers-Estes. Soon after the bout it was disclosed that Caplan fought with a torn MCL.
Standing in her way will be the Elmira, New York native Martin, a amateur MMA champion who is also the number two ranked amateur female featherweight fighter in the country, according to the ISCF.
For more information and to order tickets, please visit the official Matrix Fights website at www.MatrixFights.com.

UFC lightweights Ross Pearson (11-3) and Cole Miller (16-4) will meet at UFC Fight Night 22 in September.
The unannounced UFN 22 will take place on Sept. 15 and no rumor has surfaced as to the location of the event but sources have hinted at an East Coast market.
Pearson is the lightweight winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” season 9, and has so far won all three of his UFC bouts, including the four straight fights. He last appeared at UFN 21 against Dennis Siver, earning a unanimous decision victory in a bout that saw both men receive the “Fight of the Night” honor. Pearson also has wins over Aaron Riley and fellow Brit Andre Winner.
Miller meanwhile, is 1-1 in his past two but 3-1 in his past four matches. His last victory was over Dan Lauzon at UFC 108 last January. He submitted the younger Lauzon brother by modified kimura on the Spike broadcasted prelim fight which earned him the “Submission of the Night” award.

UFC middleweight fighters Alan Belcher (16-6) and former title challenger Demian Maia (12-2) are being tapped to headline the next UFC Fight Night event.
A source close to the situation has confirmed that one of the two has already agreed to the fight.
UFC Fight Night 22 has yet to be officially announced, but is expected to take place on Sept. 15 in an East Coast market and serve as a lead-in for the debut for season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter” on Spike TV.
An exciting fighter, Belcher has won his past two bouts and earned “Fight Night” awards in his past four matches. He recently submitted Patrick Côté at UFC 113 earning the “Submisison of the Night” award and defeated Wilson Gouveia via TKO at UFC 107 last December in a fight that earned both men the “Fight of the Night” honor. Belcher earned a “Fight of the Night” award in a loss to Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 100 and won a “Submission of the Night” against Denis Kang at UFC 93.
Maia is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Anderson Silva after both men met in Abu Dhabi for the UFC middleweight title at UFC 112. Maia replaced an injured Vitor Belfort in the fight which saw a lot of criticism sent Silva’s way for his actions in the octagon. Maia’s previous fight against Dan Miller at UFC 109 ended in a unanimous decision victory for the Brazilan. Maia is also no stranger to “Fight Night” awards having earned four “Submission of the Night” honors in his eight UFC bouts.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia (26-6) doesn’t care if you hate him, because he hates you just as much.
This past Friday Sylvia earned his second straight victory, after losing three straight, having defeated five times World’s Strongest Man Mariusz Pudzianowski in the main event of “Moosin: God of Martial Arts” show.
The heavyweight weighed in at 305 pounds for the event and makes no apologies to fans for his size, or as a matter of face, for anything else he’s done.
“I know what I’ve done,” he responded Monday. “I know no one else has been a five-time UFC heavyweight champ besides Randy (Couture). As soon as Brock (Lesnar) defends it and makes that, then he’s in that division too, but no one else is. Not even Arlovski.”
“It is what it is,” he said. “I am who I am. I’ve made statements and stuff. If you hate me, I hate you. I don’t care. I don’t care if you don’t like me, to be honest with you. That’s just the way it is. I’m not going to change for anybody. I’m not going to kiss people’s butts and so on and so forth. That’s just not me. I’m from the East Coast, and that’s just the way we’re all brought up.”
“I’m drastically different,” he said of his fight-week personality. “I have no patience. I’ve worked my butt off for 10 weeks to prepare myself for my opponent, and it’s constantly going through my mind. When I go to bed, when I get up, it’s all about who I’m fighting and what I have to do to win this fight. That’s when a lot of the fans, they’ll come in to the show and they’ll see this standoffish guy who’s set on beating the guy in front of me. Maybe that’s it?”
Sylvia was a recent guest on Sherdog.com’s radio show and fans can listen to the entire interview by clicking the link.
More photo’s of Sylvia and the entire Moosin event can be found at MiddleEasy.com.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts Tatiana Garcia and Emily Kwok.
Last week on our show we highlighted elite female grapplers Leticia Ribeiro and Beatriz Mesquita, of Gracie Humaita. This week on our show we continue our coverage of the women’s jiu-jitsu scene with Tatiana Garcia and Emily Kwok. In a contribution from our east coast correspondent Christian Simamora, we learn more about what it takes to overcome obstacles to achieve the difficult dream of becoming a black belt in jiu-jitsu. Consider this excerpt from the conversation:
The FightWorks Podcast: Did you find that in your circle of family of friends that there was opposition to you doing jiu-jitsu?
Tatiana Garcia: My parents never watched any of my matches. I don’t think they even know what [jiu-jitsu] is. I had to train two years without telling them. And when they found out they took my car so I couldn’t drive. I had to take the bus. It was a challenge. Now, they accept it because they have no other choice. But it was hard. I used to do classical ballet before I got into jiu-jitsu so for them it was like a shock. I was in college in the U.S. as a freshman. I came to the U.S. to study and then I went back to Brazil for a couple of months for vacation and I started jiu-jitsu. So I quit school. I didn’t want to come back, and I wanted to do jiu-jitsu. So that was even worse. But you know what? Today I can say I’m so happy with what I do. I do what I love to do. No matter what other choice I could wdo with my life, I did what I wanted and I’m so happy about it.
Lots of good lessons for all jiu-jitsu practitioners about fighting hard on the mats and in life. For more on Tatiana check out MGinAction.com (yes, she is Marcelo Garcia’s wife) and Emily would be mad if we didn’t send you to WomensGrappling.org: jiu-jitsu camps just for the ladies.
We will also speak with Antonio “Nino” Schembri, who has been away from jiu-jitsu for a while but is now back in action. Schembri was the 1996 absolute black belt champion at the Brazilian National Championship, and now has a school in Manhattan Beach. We were able to speak with him at the Fabio Santos Open in San Diego last week (check him out in this video from the event if you haven’t seen it yet).
Finally we will speak with Rener Gracie about a very promising opportunity for jiu-jitsu! With enough votes, the Gracies of Torrance (Rorion, Ryron, Rener, Ralek, Reylan, and others!) will be bringing jiu-jitsu into homes across the nation on a reality show based on making kids safer from bullying by showing them jiu-jitsu techniques. Rener will bring us up to speed on that, but in the meantime, make sure you go vote! Multiple votes are allowed.
