The WEC today announced a pair of preliminary card contests for its
upcoming WEC 49 event, as Karen Darabedyan meets Will
Kerr, while Rafael Assuncao faces Diego Nunes.

Both bouts were previously reported by MMAjunkie.com.

Featuring a  lightweight matchup between former champion Jamei Varner
and fast-rising prospect Kamal Shalorus, "WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus"
takes place June 20 at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and is
the promotion's first trip to the country. The main card airs live on
Versus.

weclogoNews of two more match-ups for the World Extreme Cagefighting’s next event, WEC 49, have been targeted for the preliminary card.

A bantamweight bout between Will Campuazano (7-1) and Ravael Rebellow (6-3), as well as a featherweight matchup between Rafael Assunção (14-2) and Diego Nunes (13-1).

WEC 49 is set to take place on June 20th at the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and will mark the promotions Canadian debut with the main card airing live on the Versus network.

Campuazano is 1-1 in the WEC so far, having defeated Coty Wheeler at WEC 46 in his last fight. That bout also earned both men the “Fight of the Night” honor. The loss was to Damacio Page at WEC 43 in Campuazano’s WEC debut, marking the first loss of his professional career.

Rebellow is also 1-1, coming off a win after losing his WEC debut. The Jiu-Jitsu fighter defeated Kyle Dietz at WEC 41 by submission and lost a split decision to Japanese fighter Kenji Osawa at WEC 39.

Assunção looks to erase a loss after being defeated by Urijah Faber in his last fight at WEC 46. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt had won six straight before the loss and is is 2-1 in the WEC.

Nunes suffered the first loss of his career against LC Davis at WEC 44 in his last fight. The Brazilian had won thirteen straight matches including two in the WEC over Cole Province and Rafael Dias.

A featherweight match-up between Rafael Assuncao and Diego Nunes has been targeted for WEC 49's preliminary card.

Sources close to the event tell MMAjunkie.com that both competitors have agreed to the fight, though bout agreements have not been distributed. The match-up was first reported by MMAWeekly.com.

WEC 49 takes place June 20 at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and is the promotion's first trip to the country. The event falls one week after UFC 115 hits GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia.



Injured Diego Nunes out of WEC 47 fight with Leonard Garcia, WEC seeks replacement

An injury has forced Diego Nunes (13-1 MMA, 2-1 WEC) out of a scheduled WEC 47 preliminary-card fight with Leonard Garcia (13-5 MMA, 3-2 WEC).

MMAjunkie.com today confirmed with a source close to Nunes that the featherweight has pulled out of the bout. MMAWeekly.com first reported the undisclosed injury on Wednesday.

Sources close to the event told MMAjunkie.com that as of Thursday afternoon a replacement has not been secured but that WEC officials hope to keep Garcia on the March 6 card.

A featherweight bout between Leonard Garcia (13-5 MMA, 3-2 WEC) and Diego Nunes (13-1 MMA, 2-1 WEC) is now official for next month's "WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz" event.

MMAjunkie.com first reported the bout in January, and WEC officials have since confirmed it'll be part of the night's un-aired preliminary card.

wec-47-poster_165The World Extreme Cagefighting promotion added a bantamweight bout to it’s preliminary card on Monday. With the main card almost full, WEC officials announced a matchup between Chad Goerge (11-4) and Scott Jorgensen (8-3).

WEC 47 takes place on March 6 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio and will be headlined by a bantamweight bout between champ Brian Bowles vs. Dominick Cruz, with the main card airing on Versus.

George is riding a six fight win streak, which include a victory over John Hosman in his WEC debut in December. He earned a unanimous decision over Hosman and will look to make it seven in a row against Jorgensen.

Jorgensen has won two straight, while going 4-1 in his past five bouts all of which have been fought in the WEC. He last appeared at WEC 45 against Takeya Mizugaki where he defeated the Japanese fighter via unanimous decision, a bout which earned both men the “Fight of the Night” honor.

wec-47-poster_165Two more bouts have been added the WEC 47 “Bowles vs. Cruz” event set for March 6th at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Featherweights Deividas Taurosevičius (12-3) vs. LC Davis (15-2) will meet on the main card, while a lightweight bout between Bendy Casmir (19-5-2) vs. Ricardo Lamas (7-1) will go to the preliminary card of WEC 47.

The former IFL fighter Taurosevičius comes into the bout riding two victories over Mackens Semerzier and Javier Vazquez since making his WEC debut at WEC 43 in October of last year. The Lithuanian has won eight victories via submission and has never been finished in the ring, losing twice by decision.

Davis has also won both of his WEC bouts having defeated Diego Nunes and Javier Vazquez. He last appeared against Nunes at WEC 44, earning a unanimous decision victory at the November event.

French fighter Casmir will make his WEC debut against Lamas and will bring a three fight win streak into the cage. His last fight was in March of 2009 where he defeated Maratbek Kalabekov at a ProFC – Russia vs. Europe event in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. Casmir has won 15 of his past 17 bouts, which include one loss and one draw.

Lamas earned a victory over James Krause at WEC 44 after losing his first career bout to Danny Castillo at WEC 42. So far the collegiate All-American wrestler has gone 2-1 in the WEC since his debut in March of 2009, earning unanimous decision victories over Krause and Bart Palaszewski.

wec-47-poster_165World Extreme Cagefighting officials were busy on Monday confirming opponents for Miguel Torres (37-2) and Jens Pulver (22-12) as part of WEC 47. Torres will face fellow bantamweight Joseph Benavidez (11-1), while Pulver returns to the cage against Javier Vazquez (13-4).

MMAjunkie.com reports another matchup between Leonard Garcia (13-5) and Diego Nunes (13-1) who have made verbal agreements to meet

WEC 47 takes place March 6 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, with a Versus-televised headliner of WEC bantamweight champ Brian Bowles vs. Dominick Cruz.

Torres lost the WEC bantamweight title and had his 17 fight win streak stopped by Brian Bowles in his last bout. Bowles KO’d Torres at 3:57 of the first round of their match. A victory for Torres could earn him a shot at the title.

Benavidez defeated Rani Yahya in his last fight via TKO at WEC 45, erasing the only loss on his record to Dominick Cruz at WEC 42. Of course a victory for Benavidez over Torres would catapult him into title contention also.

Pulver has lost four straight bouts, going 1-6 in his past seven. His last appearance at WEC 41 in June was against Josh Grispi, dropping the bout in just 33 seconds via submission.

Vasquez has dropped two straight and will look to climb back into the win column against Pulver. He dropped a split decision to Deividas Taurosevičius in his last fight at WEC 43.

Garcia enters his bout against Nunes on a loss after Manvel Gamburyan earned a unanimous decision over the featherweight fighter. In his past five WEC bouts, Garcia has gone 3-2.

Nunes had his 13 fight undefeated streak stopped by LC Davis at WEC 44 via unanimous decision. In his two other WEC appearances Nunes has earned unanimous decision victories over Rafael Dias and Cole Province.
