Bellator Fighting Championships came one step closer to determining the first heavyweight champion in promotional history Thursday night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Bellator 29, as both Cole Konrad and Neil Grove emerged victorious in their respective bouts to earn spots in the division’s tournament final.

Konrad defeated Damian Grabowski, who entered the match-up with a 13-0 record, by way of unanimous decision. The two-time NCAA wrestling champion used his grappling skills to take “The Polish Pitbull” down throughout the fight and control him from the top. It was Konrad’s fourth consecutive win by way of the judges’ scorecards and improved his overall record to 6-0.

Comparably, 39-year old Grove’s journey to the Bellator heavyweight title-fight took a lot less time than Konrad’s. The 6’6” Brit knocked Alexey Oleinik forty-five seconds into the opening frame of their Bellator 29 bout. It was Grove’s second straight first-round TKO for the organization (a 90-second win over Eddie Sanchez at Bellator 24 being the other).

The full list of Bellator 29 results is as follows:

Justin Lemke def. Jason Guida via Split Decision
Kyle Weickhardt def. Luis Ramirez via KO Round 1 (Head Kick)
Sasa Perkic def. Nick Dupees via Unanimous Decision
Jameel Massouh def. Nick Mamalis via Submission Round 1 (Guillotine Choke)
Brett Cooper def. Matt Major via TKO Round 2 (Strikes)
Neil Grove def. Alexey Oleinik via TKO Round 1 (Strikes)
Cole Konrad def. Damian Grabowski via Unanimous Decision

Drew Fickett submits trio of opponents to win Shine Fights Grand Prix

Fans of MMA are likely familiar with Drew Fickett’s name for a plethora of reasons. The 30-year old has experienced a number of notable highs and lows in the sport, including wins over Josh Koscheck, Kurt Pellegrino, and Ken Florian earlier in his career to arrests, bizarre post-fight antics, and professional disputes with a variety of promotions.

Friday night Fickett gave the public another reason to remember his name, winning Shine Fights controversial eight-man, single-evening tournament with a series of submissions over opponents Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett, Dennis Bermudez, and finally Carlos Prater. The wins improved Fickett’s overall record to 40-13 and could mark a turnaround in his career. Prior to the victories, Fickett had dropped seven of his previous ten bouts but won in April over MMA veteran Derrick Noble meaning he’s officially on a four-fight streak in the right direction. Fickett was also the only Shine Fights competitor to finish an adversary, let alone more than one of them.

Prater advanced in the tournament after Rich Crunkilton was unable to compete in the semi-final though he defeated Prater via split decision in the night’s opening round. The Brazilian-by-way-of-Texas then fought another alternate, Charlie Brown, who took the place of Kyle Baker (also injured in an opening round split decision victory). Prater out-pointed Brown to advance to the card’s main event where he eventually fell to Fickett by way of Rear-Naked Choke a few minutes into the match-up.

A complete list of Shine Fights results can be found below:

Charlie Brown def. Brian van Hovan via Majority Decision
Drew Fickett def. Charles Bennett via Submission Round 1 (Guillotine Choke)
Dennis Bermudez def. Shannon Gugerty via Unanimous Decision
Kyle Baker def. James Warfield via Split Decision
Rich Crunkilton def. Carlo Prater via Split Decision
Drew Fickett def. Dennis Bermudez via Submission Round 1 (Rear-Naked Choke)
Carlo Prater def. Charlie Brown via Split Decision
Drew Fickett def. Carlo Prater via Submission Round 1 (Rear-Naked Choke)
