Kory Hudson didn’t have to convince his sister, Brittaney, to come watch him at the state wrestling tournament.

She had to be there anyway.

The Bennett High School siblings each qualified in Class 3A, marking what is believed to be the first time a brother-sister tandem has qualified in the same season.

Kory, a freshman wrestling at 140 pounds, wiped out a two-point deficit in the final 20 seconds Thursday at the Pepsi Center to defeat Strasburg’s Justice Smith 4-3.  Brittaney, a senior 103-pounder, lost her first-round match by technical fall (17-2) to Diondre Garcia of Buena Vista.  But that setback didn’t taint the experience.

“It’s something I can’t even describe,” Brittaney Hudson said. “We didn’t know it’d be this big of a deal.  It’s always been our goal to make it together. He’s my best friend.”

Colorado High School

Wrestling State Tournament

The highlight of this week will be Colorado’s wrestling tournament, which began in 1936. The tournament at the Pepsi Center, which starts Thursday, will have 896 wrestlers deciding individual and team championships over three days. The field’s ultimate session, the championship finals, will be preceded by one of the school year’s most watched and most anticipated events, the parade of champions that begins at 6:30 p.m.

Meridian High School’s Tanner Hall (No. 2 @ 215) is that good.

Last week, on National Signing Day, dozens of local student-athletes and thousands across the country signed their college national letters of intent.

Imagine, however, if only two high school football players in the nation were given scholarships.

“He is the best wrestler in the world in his weight class in high school,” said Mike Davies, a volunteer coach for the Meridian High wrestling team. “There’s no doubt about it.”

“I’m not training to beat the kid across the street,” said Tanner Hall, “I’m training to beat the kid across the ocean.”

Hall is one of two high school wrestlers whose life will become one big training session for the Olympics.

“I get an opportunity to go down to the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,” Hall said.

“If you talk to some of the top recruits in this country, they won’t even know about this program because it’s only even offered to the elite of the elite,” said Davies.

Apple Valley (MN) Destin McCauley (No. 1 @ 152) and Germantown (WI) Jesse Thielke (No. 1 @ 130) are the other two high school wrestlers who will be joining him.

FightRibbon® shows the loving, considerate side of the world’s fastest growing sport, Mixed Martial Arts (aka Cage Fighting).

In a news world mostly dominated by stories of random shootings and unethical politicians, here’s a bit of good news about a group of professional athletes volunteering their time to show love and inspiration to complete strangers. But these are no ordinary “strangers,” and definitely no ordinary “athletes.”

On January 31st, 2011, the young, innocent patients at The Children’s Hospital Denver, Colorado will be getting a special visit from a FightRibbon® team, including several of today’s biggest stars in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

The famous Grudge Training Center in Wheat Ridge, CO, the home gym of several household names in the world of MMA, and an affiliate gym of the Jackson/Van Arsdale Training Center in New Mexico, is the host gym of an event that is spot-lighting a fight of a different kind: the fight for life…more specifically, the fight to inspire children who are fighting for their lives.

FightRibbon® (www.FightRibbon.com), a clothing company founded on the ideals of promoting cancer awareness and helping those in need, is the company sponsoring and organizing the event. This visit at The Children’s Hospital Denver is the third of it’s kind in what is described as “…a growing movement of compassion…” according to FightRibbon® founders, Brent Thompson and Scott Wells, two businessmen from Kentucky. (The two previous visits were to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, KY, and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.)

Along with the outreach team from FightRibbon® and MMA news correspondent Ron Kruck with a camera crew from the TV show “InsideMMA” (filming the visit), the fighters from Grudge Training Centers attending the event include top names like Shane Carwin, Brendan Schaub, Nate Marquardt, Rashad Evans, coaches Trevor Wittman and Mike Van Arsdale, along with many more stars and rising stars in the sport. While many fans that had the pleasure to witness one of the greatest fights put on in recent memory between “The Korean Zombie” Chang Sung Jung and Leonard Garcia at WEC 48 had anticipated an immediate rematch between the pair, it now looks likely that that particular fight will have to wait.

It now looks likely that “The Korean Zombie” will in fact face off with George Roop at WEC 51, while Garcia is expected to face off with Mark Hominick at the same event according to recent reports at MMAWeekly.

WEC 51 is expected to take place on September 8 from the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado while airing live on Versus.

Nothing has been announced yet, but the card is expected to be headlined by a featherweight title bout between Jose Aldo and Manny Gamburyan.

Garcia recently edged out Jung via narrow split decision in a wild slugfest widely considered to be the front-runnner for “Fight of the Year” honors, while Roop went to a draw with Garcia in his previous outing, and Hominick is looking for his fourth consecutive victory.

Fresh off a barnburner with fellow Canadian Yves Jabouin at WEC 49, Mark Hominick takes on another hard-swinging featherweight when he meets Leonard Garcia on the televised portion of WEC 51.

The match-up was first reported by MMAWeekly.com and confirmed today by MMAjunkie.com via sources close to the promotion.

Although not officially announced, WEC 51 takes place Sept. 30 at the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colo., and airs live on Versus.
