June 25th, 2010 | Author: UFC Press Releases

Thomas Gerbasi, UFC - Following an injury to his ribs suffered in training, Wanderlei Silva has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 116 match with Yoshihiro Akiyama on July 3rd in Las Vegas. But Asian superstar Akiyama will remain in the co-main event slot on this highly-anticipated card, with his new opponent being middleweight contender and a veteran of The Ultimate Fighter season one, Chris "The Crippler" Leben.

Matt Brown is set to take on Chris “Lights Out” Lytle at UFC 116 on July 3 and the fight has MMA fans salivating for what should be an exciting bout. The first fight between the two took place outside the UFC with Lytle getting the submission victory via guillotine choke but Brown had only two weeks to prepare for the bout. This time both fighters have had a full camp and Brown will be hungry for a win after lossing to Ricardo Almeida at UFC 111. Lytle has rattled off two victories in a row, his latest coming at UFC 110 against Brian Foster. Brown isn’t looking for Fight of the Night honors though, he’s looking for the KO of the Night(quote via UFC.com):

“This time I have a full training camp, so I’ll be prepared for whatever comes,” he says. “And I can see where people are coming from with the fight of the night stuff. There’s no question that if I was looking at it from the outside that I would say it’s got Fight of the Night written all over it. But I plan on it being Knockout of the Night—I don’t see it being Fight of the Night at all. I’m going to knock him out. I don’t think either of us is going to be happy with this fight going to a decision. We’re coming, we’re out for blood. We’re coming to hurt each other.”

Wanderlei Silva Replaced By Chris Leben To Fight Akiyama At UFC 116.

June 22nd, 2010 | Author: TheMMANews.com
This article was originally published at TheMMANews.com. Copyright: TheMMANews.com.

WanderleiSilvaUFC middleweight Wanderlei Silva has injured his ribs and will not be competing at UFC 116 where he was originally scheduled to take on Yoshihiro Akiyama. Instead Chris Leben has stepped in on extremely short notice and will look to continue to write his comback story which started at The Ultimate Finale 11 where he took out Aaron Simpson. Sexyama, however, is a very good test for any fighter let alone one who will be fighting again so soon.

Akiyama hasn’t fought since UFC 100 where he gained the decision victory over Alan Belcher, increasing his current win streak to 11. While Leben has agreed to fight, the official signing has not yet taken place. The MMA News will update this story as news comes out.

UFC 116 features a main event bout between heavyweight champions Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin which will truly be the battle of the big men, and will also feature a rematch between Stephan Bonna and Krzysztof Soszynski.

Brendan Schaub Ready To Showcase His Skills Against Chris Tuchscherer

May 28th, 2010 | Author: TheMMANews.com
This article was originally published at TheMMANews.com. Copyright: TheMMANews.com.

Brendan-SchaubUFC heavyweight and “TUF 10″ season runner up Brendan Schaub (5-1) will meet Chris Tuchscherer (18-2) at the UFC 116 event. Both men will be fighting on the preliminary card but will be the lead in to the pay-per-view event by making the live Spike TV broadcast.

“UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin” is set to go down on July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. and will be headlined by a UFC heavyweight title unification bout between champion Brock Lesnar vs. interim champ Shane Carwin.

Schaub recently talked about his upcoming bout with FightHype.com.

“Chris is a vet. This will be his 21st professional fight and he’s 18-2. He’s a tough wrestler man. I think he’s the 5th All American, National Champ or Olympic wrestler I have fought. He’s not going to keep it a secret, he wants to take me down and pound me out. That’s how he gets most of his wins. I expect him to come out and be pretty aggressive, look for a takedown or maybe press me against the cage, but I think he’s going to have his hands full trying to do any of those things…I think Chris is the perfect opponent for me to showcase my skills. He has a good chin, he’s a real tough guy and I think it will take more than one shot to put this guy away.”

Schaub defeated Chase Gormley last March by TKO (punches) at the UFC LIVE: Vera vs. Jones event. He’s 1-1 in the UFC, having lost his debut against “TUF 10″ Finale winner Roy Nelson in December.

Aaron Simpson vs. Chris Leben, Dennis Siver vs. Spencer Fisher added to TUF 11 Finale

May 20th, 2010 | Author: Five Ounces of Pain
This article was originally published at Five Ounces of Pain. Copyright: Five Ounces of Pain.

NEW YORK, NY, May 19, 2010 – The live finale of “The Ultimate Fighter: Team Liddell vs Team Ortiz” on Spike TV will include two bouts showcasing four of the UFC’s most exciting fighters. Emanating from The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV on Saturday, June 19 at 9:00 PM ET, the fights announced today include a middleweight bout between Aaron Simpson (7-0) and Chris Leben (19-6), and a lightweight matchup pitting Dennis Siver (15-7) against Spencer Fisher (24-5).

Currently sporting a 7-0 record, with all but one of his victories coming via knockout, Aaron Simpson is a former All-American wrestler who is developing into a lethal striker. He left a lasting impression on the minds of fight fans with his 18-second knockout of David Avellan at WEC 36 in November 2008. After entering the UFC, he continued to display his devastating punching power, defeating Tim McKenzie and Ed Herman via TKO early in successive bouts, before running his UFC win streak to three with a decision victory over Tom Lawlor this past January.

Simpson’s opponent is the enigmatic Chris “The Crippler” Leben (19-6), who was one of the breakout stars from the historic first season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Leben’s UFC career began with seven straight wins over such notables as Jorge Rivera, Patrick Cote, and Luigi Fioravanti. Never one to back down from a challenge, Leben had his streak snapped in April 2006 by current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Since then, he has continued to take on all comers, and following a win over Jay Silva earlier this year, he hopes that a victory over the undefeated Sampson will further him on the path for a shot at the UFC middleweight title.

Hailing from Mannheim, Germany, Dennis Siver has 22 professional bouts under his belt, and only four have gone to decision. He made his UFC debut in 2007, but it was in January 2009 that he truly announced his arrival as he took home “Knockout of the Night” honors with a TKO victory over Nate Mohr at UFC 93, knocking out his opponent with a spinning back kick. After a win over Dale Hartt at UFC 99 in his native Germany, he once again scored a “Knockout of the Night” bonus with the same spinning back kick against Paul Kelly at UFC 105 in November 2009. He had his four fight winning streak stopped by Ross Pearson this past March, but will look to bounce back against his opponent, Spencer Fisher, on June 19.

North Carolina native Spencer Fisher has established himself as one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC over the course of his five year career with the organization. He holds wins over such UFC notables as Thiago Alves, Sam Stout, and Jeremy Stephens, and has twice won “Fight of the Night” honors for his relentless attack inside the Octagon™. Coming off of a tough loss to Joe Stevenson at UFC 104, Fisher hopes to have his hand raised at the end of what promises to be an exciting fight with Siver.

Other bouts, including the finals of “The Ultimate Fighter: Team Liddell vs Team Ortiz,” will be announced at a later date. The two finalists will be competing for a six-figure contract with the preeminent mixed martial arts organization in the world, The Ultimate Fighting Championship®.

Chris Lytle vs. Matt Brown set for UFC 116

April 22nd, 2010 | Author: Five Ounces of Pain
This article was originally published at Five Ounces of Pain. Copyright: Five Ounces of Pain.

The undercard for UFC 116 just got a bit more exciting with a fight between Matt Brown and Chris “Lights Out” Lytle has been booked according to a recent report on MMA Fighting.

Both fighters usually put on some of the most exciting fights in the welterweight division and this fight should be no different. This fight has been added to what should be a huge event with the return of Brock Lesnar in the main event.

This will be a rematch from 2007 in the United Fight League, as Lytle choked Brown out with a guillotine choke in the second round.

Since his return to the UFC after a stint on the fourth season of The Ultimate Fighter, Lytle has racked up seven “Of the Night” bonuses, with four fights of the night bonuses against the likes of Kevin Burns, Marcus Davis, Paul Taylor, and Thiago Alves. Since his return in 2007, Lytle has gone 6-3 with his only loses to Davis, Alves, and Matt Hughes. His most recent victory was over Brian Foster in-which he executed a beautiful rolling kneebar only a minute into the fight.

Brown made his debut after his stint on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rampage vs. Team Griffin, and has gone 4-2 in the promotion, with his only losses to Dong Hyun-Kim and recently to Ricardo Almeida at UFC 111. Brown’s most memorable fight in the octagon might be his fight against Pete Sell at UFC 96, in which he dropped Sell to only have the fight restarted, and then proceeded to pound Sell some more despite Brown wanting the fight stopped.

UFC 116 takes place on July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, and it will be aired on PPV.
