No. 1 Apple Valley: The Making of Champions

When walking into the practice wrestling facility at Apple Valley High School, the theme is clear:  Champions.

‘National Champions’ is scrawled in five-foot block letters across one wall of the facility.  The words adorn coaches’ and players’ practice gear.

And when wrestling head coach James Jackson urges his wrestlers to give him another sprint, crunch or drill he doesn’t yell or scream or even raise his voice.  In an even tone, Jackson simply asks his team, “What do champions do?”

“One more,” they reply in unison.

There may not be a better word than “champions” to describe the 2010-11 class of Apple Valley wrestlers.  In high school wrestling, Apple Valley is the team that has faced the best in the nation and sent them home defeated.

The Eagles wrestling team peaked early this season, winning two prominent national tournaments—The Clash in Rochester (MN) and the Cheesehead in Kaukauna (WI)—over a 10-day span in late December and early January.

“We wrestled Brandon (FL), who was rated third in the country, and Blair Academy (NJ), who was ranked second, and we beat both of them soundly,” Jackson said.

But to understand Apple Valley wrestling’s storied success, it’s necessary to look to the roots of a program that has been to the state wrestling tournament every year since 1983, taking 18 state titles.

FINAL Seeds

These are the FINAL seeds for the Battle for the Belt.  We understand that there will be some discussion over where some wrestlers belong in the bracket.  The coaching staff spent several hours, taking into account all the information available to us, with the ultimate goal of separating the best kids.  In the end, the kids will compete on the mat to see who takes home the belt.   Thank you to the coaches for all of your input as we try to make this tournament among the best in the state.

Notes: Highly disputed weight class at the top. Ultimately, we went best performance at last year’s state meet, giving the 3 seed to Delgado.

1) Fabian Garcia (Turlock)
2) Martin Ramirez (Elk Grove)
3) Joey Moita (De La Salle)

10) Chad Gregory (Poway); San Diego Section Placer
11) Michael Rodriguez (Alta Loma); CIF Champ, 5th @ TV last year
12) TJ Grisafe (La Costa Canyon); 2nd CIF
13) Rod Keaster (Sultana); 4th CIF, H2H over Micou (TV)
14) Joe Micou (Temecula Valley); H2H over Zimmer of Clovis West
15) Tyler Zimmer (Clovis West); placed 6th at Doc B over other potential seeds in the weight class.
16) Anthony Figueroa (San Fernando); 3rd LA Section

Notes: Being completely honest, this was by far the toughest weight to seed one through sixteen. Any which way it gets seeded, opposing coaches will have arguments that are valid depending on your perspective. Ultimately, head to head victories and former state/section placing took precedence in deciding the seeds.

135
1) Vince Rodriguez (Clovis North)
2) Willie Fox (Gilroy)
3) Miguel Gallegos (San Fernando); H2H over Taylor at state last year and undefeated
4) Jesse Taylor (Poway)

13) Daniel Leyva (Monte Vista)
14) Jason Howard (Carter)
15) Louie DeLaTorre (Temescal Canyon)
16) Luke Garza (Montclair)

140
1) Isaiah Martinez (Lemoore)
2) Nick Cano (St Francis); 3rd at state, undefeated
3) Shane Tate; 3rd at state, 2 losses

5) Tim Box (Bakersfield)
6) Alex Abono (De La Salle)
7) Erick Zumwalt (Edison)
8) Pang Lee (Chico)
9) Eli Mack (Alta Loma)
10) Matt Brazil (Great Oak)
11) Abraham Betancourt (San Marcos)
12) Eneas Kane (Westview)
13) BJ Solis (Hoover)
14) Marc Carreon (Central Union)

Notes: By far this was the toughest to seed at the top. Two through four all have viable arguments as to why they should be the 2 seed. Again, it came down to state placing. Cano was third at state and is currently undefeated. Tate was third at state and currently has two losses. Kastl was sixth at state. While we acknowledge that Kastl had to forfeit to sixth as a result of injury, sixth place is what he finished.

INFORMATION:

Five Counties Invitational is an individual tournament and has chosen not to go double elimination and stick with tradition and continue with a quarter-carry style format. What this means is that if your wrestler loses prior to the quarter-final round, the wrestler who he lost to must make it to the quarter-final round in order for him to continue in the tournament. If that wrestler fails to make it to quarter-finals, the wrestler who originally lost is out of the tournament completely.

St. Edward, St. Paris Graham win Ohio Duals Invitational – Results

St. Edward won its 12th Division I state dual meet championship Sunday, defeating Massillon Perry, 34-16, in the championship of the eight-team, three-round tournament at Wadsworth High School.  They also beat Mayfield (54-18) and Cincinnati Elder (50-10).

"This is very important because our team had a poor start this season with guys missing because of injuries and the [football] playoffs," sophomore 119-pounder Dean Heil, one of seven Eagles who were 3-0 on the day. "Perry is one of the main teams we're competing against and this shows we're the top team at the moment."

Perry was more impressive when it knocked off Wadsworth, 28-21, in an action-packed semifinal. Wadsworth was the two-time defending champion, and while that reign ended, so did its 37-dual meet winning streak, which dated back to December 2008.

Division II: Walsh Jesuit beat Crestwood, 40-32, for third place in the Division II tournament at St. Paris Graham, where the host Falcons rolled to the team title.

No. 7 seed Crestwood upset No. 2 Oak Harbor in the first round, 35-34, while No. 4 Walsh opened with a 38-30 win over Wauseon. Both local teams lost in the semifinals, Crestwood to Olentangy, 33-29, and Walsh to St. Paris Graham, 45-25.

In Division III, Chanel won the state title with a 39-27 finals triumph against West Jefferson at Metamora Evergreen High School.

Clovis High is this years 2011 Don Buchanan Invitational champions as they dominate the individual competition with 220 points.  Oakdale and Selma rounded out the top 3, but it was the absence of Bakersfield near the top that left people with questions.  Injuries to 3 top varsity starters left Bakersfield wondering what could have been.

"Bakersfield is the team to beat [at state]. But this showed we're for real and I feel really good about it. Today, we were pretty good, but you've got to be pretty good on two days and those two days are in March [at state]," said Clovis coach Steve Tirapelle........
