UFC 110 Bonuses Announced

This past Saturday night is one Australian George Sotiropoulos is unlikely to ever forget. Not only did the slick grappler take home a unanimous decision win over highly ranked lightweight Joe Stevenson in front of his countrymen at UFC 110, Sotiropoulos also did his part in helping earn “Fight of the Night” honors along the way. As a result he and Stevenson both netted an additional $50,000 for their efforts. Also procuring $50,000 bonuses at the event were undefeated heavyweight Cain Velasquez and Ultimate Fighter Season 4 finalist Chris Lytle.

Velasquez, who can no longer be discounted as a legitimate contender after finishing Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira in the first round of their headlining bout, won “Knockout of the Night” courtesy of some devastating ground-and-pound after a crisp combo left the iconic Brazilian reeling. Meanwhile, Lytle’s stomach-turning kneebar of Brian Foster was named “Submission of the Night”.

Velasquez batters Nogueira, Silva defeats Bisping at UFC 110

Cain Velasquez emerged from the prospect shadow to become a bonafide contender in the UFC heavyweight division as the American Kickboxing Academy trained fighter put a beating on Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira this evening at UFC 110 that will not soon be forgotten.

Velasquez had the upper hand for as long as the fight lasted; getting off first with his combinations standing, and utilizing much improved kicks to the head, midsection and legs of Nogueira to offset the decorated veteran’s chance of buliding any type of momentum. In the end it was a series of punches standing that sent Big Nog sailing to the canvas, and another brief flurry of ground and punch strikes that brought a conclusion to the one sided clinic in the opening round.

Everyone’s favorite “Axe Murderer”, Wanderlei Silva, returned to the win column this evening in Australia as the former Pride champion managed to impose his will on Michael Bisping for the duration of the pair’s three round battle, before nearly finishing off “The Count” with a swarm of punches at the bout’s conclusion. When the dust had a chance to settle it was Wanderlei who grabbed the unanimous decision nod on the judges scorecards during an impressive debut at 185 pounds.

Australian native George Sotiropoulos took many by surprise this evening as the fast rising lightweight thoroughly dismantled the much more experienced Joe Stevenson during a three round grappling clinic that resulted in a unanimous decision victory for the hometown hero.

Keith Jardine gave as good as he got from Ryan Bader for two and a half rounds before the champion of the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter sent a heavy right hand crashing into the chin of “The Dean of Mean” that sent him realing. Just moments later it was a calculated and devastating left hook from Bader that brought an abrupt conclusion to the bout.

In no major surprise, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic came away with a much needed win this evening over an extremely game Anthony Perosh via cuts at the conclusion of the second round.

Just two fights into his UFC career, welterweight prospect Brian Foster has already been involved in a pair of memorable
fights.

Foster was submitted in his debut at UFC 103 in a bout that was awarded
the evening's "Fight of the Night," but the H.I.T. Squad product
bounced back at UFC 106 with a one-sided beatdown of former contender
Brock Larson.

Now paired with perennial "Fight of the Night" candidate Chris Lytle at tonight's UFC 110 event in Sydney, Australia,
Foster has one thing on his mind: a spot at the top of the UFC's
talent-rich 170-pound division.
