Perennial state contender Brandon (FL) (No. 3 in the Nation) is gearing up for what could be a 20th state crown, but first things first.  Having already won county and district championships in recent weeks, the Eagles claimed the Class 3A, Region 2 title Saturday.

That gave the Eagles 22 straight region championships and 30 overall.  Brandon finished with 318 points, well ahead of host Kissimmee Osceola’s 172.5.

Palm Harbor University’s Aaron Hartman defeated Brandon’s two-time state champion Rossi Bruno in the 130-pound semifinals. Bruno won his consolation final to advance.

Brandon (FL) had nine champions — Devan Berrian (103 pounds), James Flint (112), Victor Fugate (119), Kevin Norstrem (125), Tyler Liveratore (135), Clark Glass (152), Wally Figaro (160), Kyle Koziel (171) and Mike Ettore (189).

Brandon High School (FL) dominated the competition this weekend with 398.5 points and won its 19th consecutive Tony Ippolito Memorial Tournament.  Florida’s class 2A – #1-ranked Springstead Eagles came up short, finishing in 2nd-place with 267.5 points.

“I don’t think there was much question or doubt that we weren’t going to win this thing,” Brandon coach Russ Cozart said. “We have a great team. We’re ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation, we’re coming off The Clash tournament in Minnesota. Our guys are progressing really well.”

Brandon had 10 Individual Champions (11 finalists) and Tyler  Libertore ran his overall record to 39-0 and won one of the two outstanding wrestler awards handed out Saturday night by the family of Tony Ippolito.  Rossi Bruno won the other as he defeated Springstead’s Virgil Toms 7-2 at 130 pounds, Liberatore (135) edged Springstead’s Nick Soto 4-3 in the finals.

Florida’s class 2A – #1-ranked Springstead Eagles will complete their regular-season schedule in grand style with a trip to the state’s premier program this weekend to meet up with 3A – #1-ranked Brandon Eagles at Brandon High School for its two-day, 31-team, 27th annual Tony Ippolito Memorial Wrestling Tournament.

“We’ve had a great season,” described Brandon Coach Cozart. “We went up to Minnesota and finished second in the national tournament (Clash), losing only to the # 1 team in the country (Apple Valley).  It was good for us because it showed us where we’re at.”

Another huge consideration at this point is health and Cozart admitted that health-wise, Brandon is 100 percent.

MFC President Mark Pavelich Reportedly Suspended By ABC

June 18th, 2010 | Author: TheMMANews.com
This article was originally published at TheMMANews.com. Copyright: TheMMANews.com.

pavelich_markIt would appear that Maximum Fighting Championship president Mark Pavelich is behind on some fees owed to the River Cree Resort & Casino located near the city of Edmonton, Canada according to TheGarv.com.

Pavelich has reportedly been suspended by the Association of Boxing Commissions for “non-payment of fees owing to the commission” which will be lifted once he pays up.

The Garv.com was tipped off today that a member of Canada’s athletic commission filed a request to to the head of the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) to officially suspend Mark Pavelich, president and promoter of Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) for “non-payment of fees owing to the commission”.

6/17/10: It looks like the fees owed by Pavelich and MFC stem back to an event in February, and more than one attempt was made to arrange payment with no response from MFC. From what I understand, the suspension is officially in place, but will be lifted if Pavelich settles up. He’s expected to do so in the next few days.

The MMA News has interviewed the MFC president in the past, and is known for some of his colorful comments on the UG forums. Hopefully this won’t effect some of his promotions upcoming events such as the HeatXC show next month and the next MFC show in the fall, which he’s looking to hold in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada for anyone living in that area. That event should showcase an MFC middleweight title bout featuring BJJ specialist Thales Leites.

Brandon Added to 2011 Clash

May 11th, 2010 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

The path to winning the 2011 Clash National High School Duals title got considerably tougher with today’s announcement that Brandon (Brandon, FL) will be joining next season’s field of thirty-two teams.

Brandon, led by Head Coach Russ Cozart, finished the 2009-10 season as the #4 ranked team in the nation.

Brandon has won twenty-one Florida state championships since 1977, including the last ten in a row. They hold the longest winning streak in the history of high school sports – 459 victories from 1973-2008. In 2005 Brandon had the distinction of having the most nationally ranked wrestlers on one team in the nation. The Brandon program has produced seventy-seven individual state champions and 173 individual state placewinners. The Brandon wrestling program was featured in the 2008 ESPN documentary “The Streak”.

Recent high-profile Brandon wrestlers include Franklin Gomez, Josh Lambrecht, David Craig, Rocky Cozart, Joe Cozart, Cesar Grajales, and Eric Grajales.

“Brandon has lost just one dual meet in the last 37 years. Their travel still needs to be approved by their local school board, but we’re thrilled and honored to to have a chance to showcase this national powerhouse,” stated Clash Tournament Director Steve Patton.

According to Patton, the credit for landing this nationally recognized team goes to Randy Cirksena, Steve Elwood, Ryan Thomas, and Kent Harfmann who make up the Clash recruiting team.

With only half of the tournament’s teams determined so far, Brandon joins an increasingly tough field of teams for next year’s Clash Duals, including (2010 Rankings) #1 Apple Valley (MN), #12 Simley (MN), #13 Montini Catholic (IL), #14 Wisconsin Rapids (WI), #17 Waverly-Shell Rock (IA), #23 Roseburg (OR), and #27 Grand Island (NE).

The 9th Annual Clash National Wrestling Duals will be on January 7th-8th, 2011 at the University Center Rochester Field House in Rochester, MN.

Fedor vs. Werdum official for Strikeforce on June 26

SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 4, 2010) – After months of anticipation, the world’s No. 1 heavyweight and pound-for-pound Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter, Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (31-1), will make his eagerly awaited return to the cage to face two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and top-ranked superstar Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum (13-4) in a STRIKEFORCE and M-1 GLOBAL co-promoted event at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. on Saturday, June 26, live on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

The Fedor-Werdum match will headline an event which will feature up to five televised fights on SHOWTIME and several non-televised undercard bouts that will be announced in the coming weeks.

A special pre-sale ticket purchase opportunity for the event will take place for “STRIKEFORCE Insider” e-newsletter subscribers (http://strikeforce.com/insider.html) from 10 a.m. PT Monday, May 10, until 10 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 13. Insiders will receive an e-newsletter with the pre-sale code.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. PT on Friday, May 14, at the HP Pavilion box office, all Ticketmaster locations (800) 745-3000, Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com) as well as www.strikeforce.com. For more information, please also visit www.M-1GLOBAL.com.

For M-1 GLOBAL’s Fedor, it is a means of gaining revenge three and a half years after the 32-year-old Werdum defeated Fedor’s brother Aleksander Emelianenko, via submission (arm triangle choke) in the first round (3:24) of a bout in Rotterdam, Holland, on Nov. 12, 2006.

The M-1 GLOBAL superstar is simply referred to as “Fedor” by millions of fans around the world. He stands at 6-foot, 235-pounds and hails from Stary Oskol, Russia. He has become the most dominant MMA fighter of all-time since he began his professional career 10 years ago.

Fedor is one of the founders of M-1 GLOBAL and has competed for the organization since its inception more than two years ago. The 33-year-old has faced and defeated nearly every other rival superstar and champion of this era, including Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Andrei Arlovski and Mark “The Hammer” Coleman.

A master of the Russian military combat system, Sambo, Fedor made his live, primetime network television (CBS) debut in his last start on Nov. 7, 2009, when he faced unbeaten rising star Brett “The Grim” Rogers in a STRIKEFORCE and M-1 Global co-promoted event. After a difficult first round in which he sustained a cut and began bleeding profusely, the Russian suddenly turned the tide in the second round, sending Rogers to the canvas with a right hand and finishing him with a series of punches.

While the fight world still regards him as undefeated, Fedor actually has one official loss on his record, the result of a doctor stoppage due to a cut he sustained seconds into a matchup with Japan’s Tsuyoshi Kosaka on Dec. 22, 2000. Fedor avenged the TKO loss with his own first round TKO of Kosaka at a PRIDE Fighting Championships event in Japan on April 3, 2005.

Since joining the ranks of STRIKEFORCE, the 6-foot-4, 240 pound Werdum, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and member of Brazil’s vaunted Chute Boxe fight squad, has notched a pair of impressive victories, the first of which came on Aug. 15, 2009 when he quickly submitted Mike “Mak” Kyle with a guillotine choke in the first round (1:24) at HP Pavilion. The following Nov. 7, Werdum battled his way to a close unanimous decision victory over Antonio “Big Foot” Silva in a live CBS primetime televised matchup.

During an eight-year tenure in MMA, Werdum has conquered a number of other superstars, including reigning STRIKEFORCE World Heavyweight Champion, Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem; and UFC stars Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon “The Truth” Vera.
