Is Apple Valley Really The No. 1 Team?

January 9th, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

Last season, a well respected wrestling publication claimed there were two national championship teams - Apple Valley High School from Minnesota and St. Paris Graham High School from Ohio. Only one of these two teams went undefeated - Apple Valley. The other, St. Paris - Graham, lost to Blair Academy in an an individual tournament, later avenging the loss in a dual. HSWrestling.Net selected Apple Valley as sole champion as a result of their season's body of work which included a Cheesehead Invite, Clash Duals, and Minnesota state championship.

The mythical national championship presented each year by HSWrestling.Net takes many factors into account when selecting the champion. A combination of dual meet and individual tournament scoring potential are used when finalizing the voting process.

How will you decide between Apple Valley and St. Paris Graham this season?

While the Apple Valley wrestlers and other media outlets might be ready to hand over the 2011 National Championship to Apple Valley we have probable cause to wait until the season is over before making such a declaration.  While Apple Valley has proven themselves to be a very strong dual meet team their inability to secure championship hardware at the Cheesehead everywhere but 152 leaves their individual tournament success in question.

The Cheesehead, while an individual tournament format, is scored for team points significantly different than Ironman and Beast of the East.  You have to ask yourself, would Apple Valley win both of these tournaments this season? If you start plugging Apple Valley wrestlers into Ironman brackets you might be a bit surprised at the outcome.

What could win St. Paris Graham the National Title?

Apple Valley, the two time defending HS Wrestling National Champions, have to lose the title.  This can be done in one of two ways:

Apple Valley Loses: Either to St. Paris Graham directly or to a common opponent in a common event format (eg. Blair Academy - Dual Meet)

Apple Valley Doesn't Win Enough: State Tournament performance, especially when comparing teams that did not directly compete all year, is weighed  very heavily. We expect Apple Valley to have 8 state champions and St. Paris to have 5.  If either falls significantly short of this mark they could see their ranking drop.

Beast of the East to aid Newark-area economy

December 12th, 2010 | Author: HSWrestling.net
This article was originally published at HSWrestling.net. Copyright: HSWrestling.net.

Seedings, Brackets, Results, & Videos will be available on the 2010 Beast of The East portal.

The Beast of the East, a major high school wrestling tournament, will be held December 18 & 19, 2010, at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center. This two-day annual event is expected to generate an overall economic impact of over $1 million including overnight accommodations, food, transportation, shopping, and miscellaneous expenses.

“The Delaware Sports Commission is thrilled to partner with the Delaware Wrestling Alliance (DWA) and the University of Delaware (UD) to ensure continued success of this elite sporting event,” said Matthew Sparks, executive director of the Delaware Sports Commission.

A not-for-profit organization, the DWA is comprised of members from the Delaware wrestling community. The DWA promotes the sport of wrestling in Delaware at all levels and, with the aid of volunteers and organizations, provides funding for wrestling programs, competitions, awards, and recognition. Since its inception in 1996, the DWA has awarded $546,000 in athletic scholarships, $60,000 of which was awarded this year.

“Eighty-five percent of the 800 wrestlers who will compete in the Beast of the East tournament will be traveling from out-of-state,” said Sparks. “Delaware’s central location, affordability, and site capacity create an ideal destination for team members and their families.”

In addition to the dozens of restaurants and retail options in the surrounding area, several hotels are supporting this event.

“This competition is highly regarded in the wrestling community,” said Matthew Sparks. “Teams, fans, and college coaches will travel from across the country to be part of the toughest high school tournament in the nation.”

(JOE HERMITT, The Patriot-News)

CLASS AAA
145 POUNDS:
Ryan Krecker (33-4), Nazareth vs. Bo Candelaria (30-3), Middletown: Candelaria looks unbeatable after scoring tech falls in the finals of districts and in Thursday’s first round of states. But don’t discount Krecker, who defeated Candelaria at Beast of the East in mid-December 7-2 and will be a tough out for the Blue Raiders star.

285 POUNDS: Evan Craig (47-0), Abington Heights vs. Adam Lazenga (41-1), Bethel Park: Craig was the runner-up at 285 as a sophomore and moved to the top of the podium a year ago. He will face his first test of the tournament in Lazenga, who is a pinning machine and put up plenty of resistance to the mighty Craig.

CLASS AA
112 POUNDS:
David White (42-3), Athens vs. Evan Link (34-4), Penn Cambria: Link is on the rebound from a surprising third-place finish in the Southwest Region last week in Johnstown. He will look to get back on track against White, a two-time state medalist and Northeast Region champion.

152 POUNDS: Tyler Hain (34-4), Warrior Run vs. Cody Wiercioch (35-1), Charleroi: Hain is a two-time PIAA runner-up and squares off against arguably the best freshman in Class AA. It’s senior against the youngster to see who will be the favorite to stand at the top of the podium on Saturday.
