Apple Valley’s Motto: “Leave No Doubt”

Apple Valley (No. 1) wrestling head coach Jim Jackson said his motto for his team this year has been to “leave no doubt” as to who the best wrestling team is in Minnesota, and possibly America. The team certainly left no doubt as to why they were the No. 1 seed at the Section 3AAA wrestling tournament held Friday at Apple Valley High School. The Eagles blew past Burnsville, Eagan and Hastings to claim the section title.

“Going to state never gets old,” assistant coach Josh Barlayge said. “We got a lot of momentum here.”

The team is returning to state with some veteran faces, but also with some new ones, including seventh-grader Mark Hall, who wrestled in the 130-pound weight class.

“It’s my all-time dream to become a state champ,” Hall said after receiving his medal Friday.

To leave no doubt that they are the best team in the nation, “we have to finish strong” at state, Jackson said. But Jackson didn’t want to look too far ahead, and was almost speechless as to how well his team performed on Friday night.

“The performance [at sections] speaks for itself,” Jackson said.

No. 1 Apple Valley: The Making of Champions

February 9th, 2011 | Author: HSWrestling.net

When walking into the practice wrestling facility at Apple Valley High School, the theme is clear:  Champions.

‘National Champions’ is scrawled in five-foot block letters across one wall of the facility.  The words adorn coaches’ and players’ practice gear.

And when wrestling head coach James Jackson urges his wrestlers to give him another sprint, crunch or drill he doesn’t yell or scream or even raise his voice.  In an even tone, Jackson simply asks his team, “What do champions do?”

“One more,” they reply in unison.

There may not be a better word than “champions” to describe the 2010-11 class of Apple Valley wrestlers.  In high school wrestling, Apple Valley is the team that has faced the best in the nation and sent them home defeated.

The Eagles wrestling team peaked early this season, winning two prominent national tournaments—The Clash in Rochester (MN) and the Cheesehead in Kaukauna (WI)—over a 10-day span in late December and early January.

“We wrestled Brandon (FL), who was rated third in the country, and Blair Academy (NJ), who was ranked second, and we beat both of them soundly,” Jackson said.

But to understand Apple Valley wrestling’s storied success, it’s necessary to look to the roots of a program that has been to the state wrestling tournament every year since 1983, taking 18 state titles.

Longendyke (No. 1 @ HWT) and the Bears Gear up for Sections

The Bears wrestling team is pouring it on strong as it gears up for sectionals, hoping to earn a spot in the state tournament for the second time in Bear history.

Currently ranked ninth in the state, the team chalked up four victories and one loss, making its record 15-5.   All five losses have been to teams ranked in the top seven in the state.

On Feb. 5 the Bears traveled to the Armstrong tournament in Plymouth where they came out 3-1.  Their loss to the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, Apple Valley, was not a surprise (nine of its wrestlers are ranked No. 1 in their weight classes).  The Bears didn’t let the loss dampen their spirits or confidence as they went on to overcome the next three teams — a 50-18 win over East View, an 80-0 sweep over Mankato West and a tight 45-33 triumph over Fridley.

During the weekend tournament, Donny Longendyke (No. 1 @ HWT) tied the school record of 172 wins with his varsity record of 172-24 (117 being pins).

Going into this week the Bears prepare to host two section opponents on Friday, Feb. 11.  That will be an important match-up that will affect the seeding for the sectional tournaments Feb. 19 in which Stillwater is the team’s No. 1 contender.  Coach Craig Nasvik notes that match-ups and individual performance is everything.

INFORMATION:

Five Counties Invitational is an individual tournament and has chosen not to go double elimination and stick with tradition and continue with a quarter-carry style format. What this means is that if your wrestler loses prior to the quarter-final round, the wrestler who he lost to must make it to the quarter-final round in order for him to continue in the tournament. If that wrestler fails to make it to quarter-finals, the wrestler who originally lost is out of the tournament completely.
