Wednesday was a busy day for the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion with several bouts announced, including a title bout, for WEC 50.
WEC 50 will take place on Aug. 18 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nev.
WEC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz (15-1) announced his first title defense via his Twitter page. He’ll be rematching Joseph Benavidez (12-1) in what should be, the events headliner.
Cruz was the only fighter so far to defeat Benavidez and did it at WEC 42 last August. The champ won the bantamweight title last March after defeating Brian Bowles for the belt. He’s won his last six straight fights.
Benavidez is coming off a sensational win over Miguel Torres at WEC 47 in March, submitting the former champ via guillotine. The submission also earned him the “Submission of the Night” award. That was his second straight victory having defeated Rani Yahya at WEC 45 before his only loss to Cruz.
Other bouts that have come to light, as we noted on Wednesday, will see Urijah Faber (23-4) drop to bantamweight and face Takeya Mizugaki (13-4-2). Shane Roller (8-2) is on tap to face Anthony Pettis (10-1) in a lightweight bout. And another lightweight matchup features undefeated Zach Micklewright (7-0) vs. Polish veteran fighter Bart Palaszewski (34-13).
Normally fans can watch WEC events on the Versus network, but with the recent success of it’s first ever pay-per-view with WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber, fans could expect a card like this one to carry the promotions second ppv.

Wednesday was a busy day as much of the post event news became available from this past weekends “WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber” event. The show took place this past Saturday night at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. with two preliminary bouts being aired on Spike TV and the showcasing of the first ever WEC pay-per-view.
The California State Athletic Commission released the notes on the attendance totals for the event. There was a total of 12,555 paid attendees to watch the featherweight title bout between still champ Jose Aldo and challenger Urijah Faber. That many fans brought in a total of $954,635 in gate revenue.
The CSAC also released the fighter salaries which totaled $336,500 for the event, setting a WEC Record. The top earner for the evening was defending featherweight champ Jose Aldo who earned $40,000 for his victory ($20,000 to show and $20,000 for the win). Read the rest of the fighter payouts after the jump.
The CSAC also suspended 11 fighters from the event. Eight fighters were handed down six month suspensions which included main event fighter Urijah Faber, who can be cleared by a physician for his left thigh and knee. Regardless of whether or not he is cleared, Faber is suspended for a minimum of 45 days for precautionary reasons. You can view the rest of the WEC 48 fighter suspensions after the jump.
Early estimates for the ppv buys has WEC 48 looking at a between 150,000-200,000 buys for the event. Something of a success considering fans had who normally watched it for free had to be convinced to pay to see this one.
Don’t expect another PPV for the next WEC event in Edmonton, UFC/WEC president Dana White told the press it will be business as usual.
“Every time we do a pay-per-view, you’ll see my monkey ass out here. But it’s business as usual when these guys are on Versus: same announcers, same everything.”
“We’ve got to take time and really look at it and hand-pick,” White said. “We’re doing so many pay-per-views, an boxing is going to do a few a year. You’ve got Vince (McMahon of the WWE) doing a bunch of pay-per-views a year. You have to pick and choose.
“We’ve got great partners with Versus and Comcast for the WEC. We know what we’re doing. We’ll do the right thing.”

Spike TV's two-fight preliminary card broadcast of this past weekend's WEC 48 event drew an average audience of 1 million
viewers, according to Spike TV officials.
The broadcast was the debut of the WEC on Spike TV, though the fight
promotion's brand was completely removed for the event. "Aldo vs. Faber Prelims" served as a
teaser for the evening's pay-per-view broadcast.
The one-hour broadcast featured a highly entertaining matchup between
featherweights Leonard Garcia and Chan Sung Jung, as well as a
lightweight contest between Anthony Pettis and Alex Karalexis.

The absolute war waged between WEC featherweights Leonard Garcia and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung during the preliminary portion of WEC 48 this evening has the potential to do for the WEC what Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar did for the UFC.
Garcia and Sung Jung played rock’em sock’em robots for the bulk of the three rounds scheduled between the pair of hard headed power punchers, battering one another about the skull, face, torso and legs with anything they could throw at one another (hooks, leg kicks, flying knees, spinning backfists, you name it) in a bout that UFC matchmaker Joe Silva declared was the greatest fight he had ever seen in his life according to Joe Rogan following the tussle.
When the dust had a chance to settle following an action packed three rounds, it was Leonard Garcia who earned the nod via split decision from two of the three judges with two scores of 29-28, while one judge gave the bout to the Zombie 29-28 in a bout that could have gone either way.
There’s no doubt who the early front runner is for that sweet $65,000 Fight of the Night bonus going into the main card, which is sure to deliver in the action department.
WEC 48 is taking place from the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California, with the preliminary portion airing live on Spike TV and the main card airing on pay-per-view.
Also on the undercard portion of the event which aired live on Spike TV was Anthony Pettis, who turned in an extremely impressive showing , battering Alex Karalexis before slapping on the fight ending triangle in the second round.
